I have not yet used any of the free online survey programs.
Does anybody have suggestions on one to start with? The basic idea would be to ask things like name, address, email, major, school, DOB etc. and then get a comma/tab/pipe separated file. ----- Art Kendall Social Research Consultants -- Sent from: http://spssx-discussion.1045642.n5.nabble.com/ ===================== To manage your subscription to SPSSX-L, send a message to [hidden email] (not to SPSSX-L), with no body text except the command. I've had a great deal of success using Survey Monkey and I found it easy to
set up a survey, set up and manage the deployment of the survey (e.g., reminders, launching and closing the survey on pre-set dates), and exporting the data to a .CSV file. I have two concerns about Survey Monkey: - on occasion recipients with very strong firewalls have been unable to respond to my survey; and - survey data resides on and "belongs" to Survey Monkey. This is only a problem when asking sensitive or personally identifiable questions. I have also used Survey Gizmo. It's organized very differently than Survey Monkey and after a decade of using Survey Monkey I have difficulty navigating around Survey Gizmo on the rare occasion I need it. Survey Gizmo also has a 'glitch' in exporting data to a .CSV that you may need to work around. (Essentially, some of the columns are exported multiple times. Not fun to clean up.) I would also recommend you avoid Lime Survey. Yes, it's free but the interface is very difficult to work with. Good luck! Hi,
I ran two studies using Limesurvey (https://www.limesurvey.org) which worked perfectly. You can chose between several output formats including SPSS syntax to read the data. You may use the CE version and install it on your server instead of using their hosting with costs. Thank you to those who replied.
The warning about survey monkey retaining the data was useful. Since the purpose was to get personal data to mange a scholarship program we did not use an online survey. One of these days I an going to figure out fillable pdf forms. For now, we just emailed a set of questions to each recipient and cut-and-pasted the results from return emails. ----- Art Kendall Social Research Consultants -- Sent from: http://spssx-discussion.1045642.n5.nabble.com/ ===================== To manage your subscription to SPSSX-L, send a message to [hidden email] (not to SPSSX-L), with no body text except the command. Hi Art,
I have used a few DIY survey tools over the years and they vary widely in their feature set, along with privacy, security, and retention policies. I can no longer recommend Qualtrics. I have lost business to them because they went directly after my clients after I added my clients' email addresses to my license (i.e., so they had access to survey creation, reporting, etc.) Once Qualtrics has any email address in their system, they consider that data to be theirs and they are very aggressive in their marketing efforts. I will wait until my license period ends and then cancel. Although I despise the name, SurveyMonkey offers a very good set of basic features and is a good value. I just sent them a request for info on their data retention policy, and so I share their response to me with you below. I recommend that you take a look at what they offer; many top companies use them regularly. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi Bob, Happy to help here- the simplest answer is you own all your data including the email addresses. Here is a bit directly from our privacy policy: . Your survey data is owned by you. Not only that, but SurveyMonkey treats your surveys as if they were private (except if you have made the surveys available via a public link). We don't sell them to anyone and we don't use the survey responses you collect for purposes unrelated to you or our services, except in a limited set of circumstances (e.g. if we are compelled by a subpoena, or if you've given us permission to do so). . We safeguard respondents' email addresses. To make it easier for you to invite people to take your surveys via email, you may upload lists of email addresses, in which case SurveyMonkey acts as a mere custodian of that data. We don't sell these email addresses and we use them only as directed by you and in accordance with this policy. The same goes for any email addresses collected by your surveys. . We hold your data securely. Read our Security Statement for more information. . Survey data is stored on servers located in the United States. More information about this is available if you are located in Canada or Europe. SurveyMonkey will process your survey data on your behalf and under your instructions (including the ones agreed to in this privacy policy). You can absolutely read all of the details here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/mp/policy/privacy-policy/ Let me know if you have additional questions. Specifically, I need to know what data you keep and for how long, and for people on, say, my work team, where I create an account, what do you do with those email addresses and names? Do you market to these individuals separately? The reason I'm asking is that I have a sensitive topic with a client who is very concerned about data privacy. I need to answer these questions and whether SurveyMonkey is the right tool. Thanks very much! Thank you for your feedback.
We already used other means to get the scholarship recipients to update their contact info. Next year if I start before it is time to actually get the data, I'll try out SurveyMonkey. ----- Art Kendall Social Research Consultants -- Sent from: http://spssx-discussion.1045642.n5.nabble.com/ ===================== To manage your subscription to SPSSX-L, send a message to [hidden email] (not to SPSSX-L), with no body text except the command. This might be doubly OT, but I still thought I should add some comments about EvaSys, the survey system we are using here where I work. It is not free, but it provides the unusual possibility to use questionnaires on paper which can be processed through a scanning procedure, and quite easily so. But it is also possible to use web based questionnaires, there is a simple choice between paper or on line versions. The fact that the data can be exported to SPSS files with labels for both variables and value labels also does not hurt. And the issue of respondents' integrity is no problem as far as I can see.
