Please forgive me for using this list to inform you, but I need to
shout, I am so mad... There has been a terrorist attack at my University (University of Navarra, SPAIN). A car bomb has exploded at the parking, injuring several students (no report of deaths, at least yet, fortunately). The responsibles, ETA, claim to be patriots that want to "free their oppresed land" (Baske country), from Spanish invaders (like me, I as born in Pamplona, but my parents come the south and east of Spain, respectively). They tell this lie once and again abroad, looking for sympathy, but the plain truth is they are serial killers, period. All deaths come from one side, ours. I am at home right now, because the police is looking for a second bomb that might be ready to explode right where I usually work. My classes (SPSS teaching, BTW) have been suspended, and I don't know when I will be able to resume them. I just want to express my sympathy to both you and your fellow
countrymen for having to live in such fear and disruption to your lives. All I can say in the face of such stupid acts of violence is that extremists can too easliy find justification in their own minds for their extreme acts by utilizing the 'ends justify the means' philosophy. Sadly, often times, they are correct in thinking that people only sit up and take notice when horrible, often sensless violence has taken place. Let us hope for a better , not perfect, world. Good luck, peace and stay safe. And I wish you, and all you care for, and all in your university, much better than this. -With warm concern, Richard ===================== To manage your subscription to SPSSX-L, send a message to [hidden email] (not to SPSSX-L), with no body text except the command. Dr. G,
it's truly terrible that it resolves to violence. My thoughts are with your and your people. Hope this will never happen again. Marta, I would like to offer my sympathy. I have been studying
political violence including terrorism since 1978 and it still hurts when I see how little progress we have made over those years.
