Opening paired .sav .spv files

I have 4 saved pairs of .sav/.spv files all open at the same time. For brevity let’s called them 1, 2, 3, and 4. When I run a script from 1 it reports to the .spv 4. Assign a name to the open SPV file with
OUTPUT NAME, then use OUTPUT ACTIVATE to make that SPV the active output
window.

It sounds like you need to use the OUTPUT ACTIVATE command.

See the Toolbar on the Output window?
Hover over the icons until you discover the one that says Designate Output. (I'll probably regret that). NOBODY is born with 'familiarity' with the syntax editor! Maybe take a few minutes to become familiar. Are you seriously opening 4 data files and pointing/clicking your way through your analyses? I'll bet that gets really confusing and constitutes a completely UNAUDITABLE sequence of error prone, potentially catastrophic actions. Even if you are keeping a journal it will be a complete mess. How do you expect to REPRODUCE any of what you have done? What happens when a CLIENT asks for documentation of what happened? I'll let Art do his soapbox thing, but you are doing yourself a serious disfavor by remaining unfamiliar with syntax. If you have questions about how to do something non trivial in SPSS, NOBODY HERE will walk you through the point and click to achieve it. Probably NOT what you wanted to hear!

I don't do cartoons, but have done some passable animations.

Notwithstanding David's tirade (with which I fully agree) you can quickly understand, and gain confidence in, the use of SPSS syntax from the tutorials on my website (no previous knowledge assumed, gentle, step-by-step, full colour screenshots at each step, lots of examples and exercises with real data). Much quicker and easier for most things.

Ah come on John, That was hardly a tirade!
I was really holding back on that one. I could have thrown in some dismissive comments about people who claim to be SPSS 'experts' while not having a clue about syntax (professional malpractice?) ! But that would have been cruel! If you want a tirade locate my pronouncements on the Model Viewer and the abandonment of MACRO and MATRIX. -----
