Options--> Output labels-->Variable values in item labels shown as

msherman
Dear List: I had a student ask me about the Tab for Output labels. There are four changes that one can make (two within Outline labeling and two within Pivot Table Labeling). It was relatively easy to figure out 3 out of the four as to what they accomplished in viewing the output window. However, there is one that I have not been able to figure out exactly what it does. No matter what changes I make I do not see the apparent changes within the outline labeling. In particular I can not figure out exactly what happens under Outline Labeling-->Variable values in items labels shown as:
1. Values
2. Labels
3. Values and Labels.

Changing the above options does not seem to change anything within the outline labeling.
There must be something simple that I am missing.
TIA
martin

Peck, Jon
Only some outline titles contain variable references.  If you run a crosstab, for example, the outline title will show either
x * y Crosstabulation
or
label-of-x * label-of-y Crosstabulation
or both, according to your option setting.

HTH,
Jon Peck

Martin,

So far as I know, the output labels tab affects only tables. I don't know
whether it affects the outline labeling (what I think of as the contents
pane). I've never tested it because I can't imagine that anyone would ever
not want to see variable names and labels and variable values and value
labels. That you don't see any difference for the variable values options
suggests to me that you or your student are not using value labels. But, I
could be wrong.
