dear all,
maybe this already came across sometime in this group (although I checked): I ran a small job, then at the end to see I aske "freq var = all". Although it produces the frequences, the data editor continues to show that frequencies is still running. This stops me from running new procedure I have to kill the process in the task manager to restart PASW Frequencies runs 15 variables, but with many unique values. Setting "format=notable" works, but then you don't have the frequencies. Does anybody have a clue and a solution? best wishes Maurice -- ___________________________________________________________________ Maurice Vergeer Department of communication Radboud University (www.ru.nl) PO Box 9104 NL-6500 HE Nijmegen The Netherlands Visiting Professor Yeungnam University, Gyeongsan, South Korea contact: E: [hidden email] T: +31 24 3612297 (direct)/ 3612372 (secretary) / maurice.vergeer (skype) personal webpage: www.mauricevergeer.nl blog: http://blog.mauricevergeer.nl/ Journalism: www.journalisteninhetdigitaletijdperk.nl CENMEP New Media and European Parliament Elections 2009 http://mauricevergeer.ruhosting.nl/cenmep Recent publications: - Eisinga, R., Franses, Ph.H. & Vergeer, M. What happens if you run?
freq var <v1> to <v15> .

Dear John,
No, doesn´t work either. The data matrix continues to show ´?´ instead of the data as if calculations/transformation still have to be performed. Therefor I used an Execute prior to Frequencies. However, that didn't help either. I also did the same job on another computer. It had the same problem. Both computers run on 4GB , windows 7. This spss data set has 95000 records, but that shouldn't be the problem. It's not possible to exit the program normally, and stopping the processor doesn't have any effect. So, the task manager then is the final resort: I kill pawstat.exe and them the spssengine.exe. " Frequencies runs 15 variables, but with many unique values."
Please define Many. 100's? 1000's? Unique in some cases over 95000 cases? FREQ ID??? Will cause the output window to become overwhelmed. If you just want the freqs and have many many values use AGGREGATE. What release? Exceptionally large tables can take lots of memory to render and if it's virtual that's going to take a long time. One approach is to use Options to control their display size.

dear all
It turned out I was too impatient: After a long long time it finished running, even though the output already was available for some time. Doing a similar "freq var=ID" works without a problem and very quick. Still, you'd expect that "stop processor" would work. And it sometimes makes you long for the text output that was once available. Anyway, thanks for the help and advice Maurice On Mon, Oct 18, 2010 at 17:33, David Marso <[hidden email]> wrote: > " Frequencies runs 15 variables, but with many unique values." > Please define Many. 100's? 1000's? Unique in some cases over 95000 cases? > FREQ ID??? Stop processor stops the SPSS engine but the process of rendering the tables is done elsewhere.
-----Original Message----- From: SPSSX(r) Discussion [mailto:[hidden email]] On Behalf Of Maurice Vergeer Sent: Tuesday, October 19, 2010 12:15 AM To: [hidden email] Subject: Re: PASW 18.0.3 bug? freq var=all leads to stalling the spss engine dear all It turned out I was too impatient: After a long long time it finished running, even though the output already was available for some time. Doing a similar "freq var=ID" works without a problem and very quick. Still, you'd expect that "stop processor" would work. And it sometimes makes you long for the text output that was once available. Dear ViAnn,
Apparently it is. Again today. even with not that many unique values, still many cases though it took quite some time to finish rendering. Enough to disrupt continuous working with spss. This reminds me of the days way back when I submitted batch jobs (SPSS7 on VM/CMS?) at the end of the day and see the next morning what the results were. This definitely made you think longer and probably better before submitting code to SPSS. Those were the days, weren't they ?
