Preserving *.sav files as last diplayed

John F Hall

If I swap the columns around in the Data Editor, save and re-open, the display retais the new column order.  However if I adjust the column widths to see variable and value labels in full, then save and re-open, the display defaults to narrow columns again.  Is there any way to save the Data Editor as last displayed?

John, are you adjusting column widths manually or via syntax (with the VARIABLE WIDTH command)?  If manually, does the same thing happen when you do it via syntax before saving the file?

It's not the Widths column, it's the Labels and Values columns.  I drag the
separators sideways to see the full text of labels.  It's lazy on my part, I
know, but it's irritating having to adjust the widths of the Labels and
Values columns every time I open a *.sav file.

The columns property affects the widths for data display, but there is no way to preserve the Variable View column widths as last set.  The scripting apis provide access to the general properties of the window, but that does not include the individual column widths.  You can add or suppress columns from the View menu, and that sticks for the dataset.
