RE: Chart editor problems

Ragnar Hanas
Hello again,
I am sorry to say that no one has responed to the question below and neither to another user´s question with similar content. I did join this list for a short time several years ago, but no replies to my questions at that time either. So this seems to be a list for only pure statistical questions. If someone would care to tell me the list policies, I would be very grateful.
Kind regards,
Ragnar Hanas

Hello,
I have been using SPSS for > 10 years but I am new to this list and would appreciate some help. I just stepped up from 11.5 to 14 and I am having problems with the chart editor It doesnt´t behave the same way I am used to from 11.5 and the manual does not address help:

1) I have to click and double-click many times to be able to edit the text on the x and y-axis. Then after closing and reopening chart editor this text is locked. Other functions in Chart Editor seem to work OK. I tried editing the chart on another computer with v. 14 installed but it didn´t work - same problem. Is this a known bug - is there a fix available?

2) With 11.5 I just copied the chart into my vector graphic program (Corel Draw) and edited it there. Now the paste special option of metafile is not available. When exporting to .eps file the text on the chart comes out as curves although I have checked for it to remain as text. How do you others display your graphics? Just copy them into the Word or Powerpoint document as bitmaps without editing?

Thanks and kind regards,

There are no rules for this list serv. If nobody replies, maybe because they
have no experience with the question you are asking. I can't imagine that
everybody knows the answer to your question.

In fact, I would say that there are equally as many questions about
transforming data as statistical questions.

I know a bit about the chart editor but don't have SPSS 14, so I can't reply
to your specific problems. My experience in 15 is that double-clicking
generally doesn't work as a selection device but a click to select the text
and then a click within the text to enter text edit mode once the item is
selected works for me. But as I said, I don't have 14 nor can I remember
much at all about 11.5.

Sure. Briefly, there aren't any list policies,
except we like people to be clear (and ideally,
to remember how to sign off without asking all of us).

People who respond to questions do so by their
own desire and initiative.

None of us knows all of SPSS. And since nobody
runs the list, there's no way to build a cadre of
people to make sure everything is covered.

We do have good resources on a wide range of
statistical methods. And on data preparation and
management and preparation (that's what I do
mostly, plus some stats). And I've seen a good
many graphics questions answered. So, no, there's
no restriction to one class of questions. I don't
know of an SPSS area that isn't covered by
somebody. You'll have seen that, though the list
is about SPSS, we also entertain questions about
statistical methods in general, and about
software to handle problems SPSS doesn't do well.

That said, questions get answered when somebody
who knows the answer has the time and energy to
answer them. And all of us vary in our free time and energy.

And, finally, there's a lot of list traffic. We
rarely keep track of unanswered questions very
far back. So reposting a question is legitimate, and often useful.

Good luck in getting this one solved. And since
it's outside my strong area, I can only send you
this meta-post and good wishes.

-Best regards,

Re: Chart editor problems

Ragnar,

You got caught in a hole.  At any one time, there is several hundred years
of collective SPSS experience lurking here.  However, it is summer and you
asked a question about the effect of a double-click in a prior version: A
very specific action that most of us don't really think twice about.  That
said, here is my 2-cents worth.

With 14 we had three chart options: the old-style legacy charts, the
middling Interactive Graphs, and the new Chart Builder.  And, as I recall,
all of this worked  in conjunction with something in the background called
'SPSS Viewer'.  With the legacy charts and Chart Builder, a double click
gets you into the chart editor.  The Interactive Graphs editor looks a bit
different.  The legacy and Chart Builder editor works the same way, which
leads me to believe they are really the same thing. The legacy charting
option simply mimics the old style chart look.  In Interactive Graphs,
double-clicking on a label will allow you to edit.  In the Chart Editor
for legacy and Chart Builder, you single click to highlight the label,
then click again once it is highlighted to edit the text.  You should
always be able to re-edit the label text by opening the chart editor,
highlighting, then clicking again.  If the text is uneditable, something
else is wrong.  Patching to 14.1 may help.

As for editing charts, I would edit everything in SPSS and drag and drop
into PowerPoint, etc.  Then resize once you get there.  I have rarely had
luck using editing charts, tables, etc. outside of the native software and
have stopped trying.

Mark

Hi,

I can only add that I also experienced some problems
with the chart editor.

In a multiple line chart, I changed one line into a
dashed line. I wanted to save this in a template file
(I believe these have the extension .sgt) but although
dozens of other things could be specified, the line
style/weight could not be saved. Weird.

Maybe you can use the (newer) chart editor, available
-I believe- in v14 and newer? The code is more
difficult but it appears to be much more flexible.

Cheers!

While having chart templates is a really great addendum they can be
frustrating & difficult to set-up and trial & error is the norm - Sometimes,
1 setting conflicts with another so again, "trial & error"
