Re: SPSS Version 20 problems

Kara D. Larkan-Skinner

Have any of you had trouble with SPSS version 20? Our Analyst is having problems with version 20 running slow (especially in Syntax) and some commands not working properly. She has contacted SPSS and our own IT department and has followed all of the recommendations but is still having trouble.  (Including uninstalling and reinstalling SPSS and JAVA).  The only suggestion that has worked so far is disabling some options (which are the benefits of having version 20) including the coloring of the syntax, error reports, etc.  The issue appears to be a JAVA run time error.  Any thoughts or suggestions? Anyone encountered similar issues?

I have just purchased Version 20 and do not seem to have those issues? What in particular is problematic?

I have been using 20 for about a month now and had no problems until last night.  Now all of the output I have generated will not stay open.  When I open the output, it freezes and causes the whole program to crash.  I have lost numerous amounts of progress and I now I have spent a whole day dealing with this.  Now if I try to generate a new output it crashes.  When it crashes there are javacore dump and trc dump files that show up in the corresponding folder the output is saved in.

This is my thesis data and I need it done yesterday.  I need help immediately.

I've also been experiencing frequent Version 20 crashes - bad ones like you
described - where I get a core dump, which I haven't seen from any program
in a looong time.  Maybe it's output/viewer related, but I'm not really
sure.  I have been able to work around the problems, for the most part, by
running smaller chunks of syntax at any given time.

I am VERY surprised that there hasn't been ANY update at all, just a couple
of minor Hot Fixes
