And the command for that is - surprise! - /TABLE, on the MATCH FILES
command, for the file you want to use as a lookup table. Like this:

MATCH FILES /FILE=*
     /TABLE='ZIP5'
     /BY ZIP5

Well covered in the MATCH FILES documentation.

EXECUTE, of course, is not necessary.

My apologies, Richard (and all).  As long as I'm being dense and
inconsiderate, I should mention that I tried /TABLE, too, after looking
at the documentation (and before mailing you), so something else must be
going on.  I'll try to track it down.

Re: SPSS add variables question

Melissa Ives
In reply to this post by Richard Ristow
Just to be sure...
/TABLE won't work if
        a) you have more than one record per /by variables in the table
file or
        b) if both files are not sorted by the /by variables.
Note too that SPSS keeps the value from the variable in the 1st file
listed, so if the variable exists in both files, make sure the file that
contains the data you want to keep is listed first.
Make sure these are not the problem(s)...

Re: SPSS add variables question

Nope, you're absolutely right, Richard.  Bad judgment on my part.  I
deserved to be called on it.  And there's some solace in the fact that
I'm not the only one having a bad day.

Melissa:  My ZIP5 table file lists each ZIP code only once under ZIP5,
so that isn't my problem.  Each file is sorted ascending by ZIP5.  When
I run this:

MATCH FILES
    /FILE =*
    /TABLE=ZIP5
    /BY ZIP5.

I get this error:

Error # 63 in column 9.  Text: ZIP5
The file does not exist.
This command not executed.

Thanks for your help. I do appreciate it.

Re: SPSS add variables question

That error message says SPSS can't find your ZIP5 file.
This suggests that you need to fully specify the path of the file (in
quotes)
unless it is already open and has a dataset name of ZIP5.

It means what it say: it couldn't find your file "ZIP5".

Make sure you can access ZIP5 on "GET FILE", then copy the exact file
specification to the TABLE subcommand.

By the by, in this code "ZIP5" is not in quotes. In your previous
example (not yet using /TABLE) it was in quotes:

>MATCH FILES /FILE=*
>      /FILE='ZIP5'
>      /BY ZIP5

Does that make a difference?

Re: SPSS add variables question

Mark Palmberg-2
In reply to this post by Melissa Ives
That was the problem.  Had to save my dataset as ZIP5, not just the file
name; Haste makes waste (my time *and* yours, unfortunately).  I did end
up having two duplicates under ZIP5 in the table file after all, but
they were quickly dealt with, and I was on my way.  Thanks so much for
your patient assistance, Melissa (and Richard).

This suggests that you need to fully specify the path of the file (in
quotes)
unless it is already open and has a dataset name of ZIP5.

Mark

Which I don't want to make too much of. I've had it pointed out that I
sounded grouchy. Grouchy always has a lot of reasons besides the
apparent occasion for it. Sorry; I try not to cultivate it.

Hmmmmm. On the face of it, /TABLE is the solution to your problem, as
you describe it. Try again; if it doesn't work, post your code with a
short listing of the output you got, and any error messages.

This is a small test and demo - SPSS 14 draft output (WRR:not saved
