Ctrl-. (Hold control down and hit the period) will stop the
processor--at least in versions through 14.

Re: how do i stop a running command

Bethany Cockburn
If it is frozen or not responding, you can go to the Task Manager to make
the file go away.  Warning: I would only use this if you're prepared to lose
unsaved work.

Hold down Control-Alt-Delete.
Click on "Task Manager"
Click on the applications tab.
Especially if the status of the SPSS file is "Not Responding", click on the
SPSS icon.
Click "End Task".

You may want to check with someone smarter than I am before doing this
because it generally shuts down all of your SPSS files.

Hi,

If your OS is Win, you can stop any frozen application with task manager : ctrl+shift+escape / or sometimes ctrl+alt+delete - and select "stop running program/process".

You wrote that you are saving 325 000 cases. Excell can store some 64 000 rows and 250 columns in a sheet. Does SPSS save the datafile into more than one sheet? Because if not then it is not possible to export such a big dataset to Excell.

Re: how do i stop a running command

Jason Burke
Jindra is correct. If the number of cases in your active dataset
exceeds Excel's row limit for a shett, it will continue writing cases
on subsequent sheets.

At least that is what SPSS 15 and 16 do, but you did not mention to us
what version that you have of SPSS or Excel for that matter....

HTH,

Jason

Re: how do i stop a running command

ViAnn Beadle
In reply to this post by Jerabek Jindrich
The biggest problem with trying to stop a process in Windows is that it's so
busy it's not listening to you.

Recent versions of SPSS create multiple sheets to hold more than 64K rows
and the most recent version of Excel 2007 support over a million rows (but
be very, very, patient with a spreadsheet this large).

Inexplicably, in v.14 I can stop the processor sometimes by clicking
the "stop processor" button on my tool bar (it only becomes clickable
when the process is running), but never with "ctrl+.". It's worth a
try; you'll probably have to add that button to your tool bar
yourself.
