It strikes me as quite ironic that a company that is apparently
positioning/ /itself ever more as a business-oriented, market research support firm would make a change like this without ever consulting with its user base. Where was the market research on this one? Like so many
others on this list, I remember the big blue syntax manual (still have it!),
and when I first figured out how to avoid punching cards by entering the code
on a dumb terminal. Now the company I’ve supported all these years (my
small university didn’t even have SPSS until I insisted that it was a
necessity after they hired me) is trying to drive me to learn R. Nice
going guys; at least our accountants will be happy! bob k. |

It may be a strategic move from SPSS Inc to shift low margin customers
to R rather than cede ground to others (who are moving anyways) and move to high margin customers also someone forgot to tell the wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SPSS Also look at the stock market price of SPSS at http://finance.yahoo.com/echarts?s=SPSS#symbol=SPSS;range=5y the stock is up 25 % in last one month and has beaten the DOW consistently for last five years. and a note on the stock price manipulation case which was dismissed at http://securities.stanford.edu/1030/SPSSE04-01/ But someone has written stuff against them on the wiki as well http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SPSS_Inc. SPSS Inc. is a software house incorporated in Chicago, most noted for the proprietary software of the same name SPSS. The use of this name has been the subject of ongoing legal action against the company for many years bottom line- the game's afoot. SPSS I don’t have dates but when I first used it ( 1975 ) it was always spelt out in full and not ‘acronymed’ !! Best Wishes John S.
