SPSS 16 problem - new untitled windows open with every file

Hi,

I recently upgraded from SPSS 14 to 16.0 through my university.   I have
had a problem with v16 that I can't seem to fix.  When I am working on an
existing dataset file that is open and active (green cross on it) each time
I open an old (created with v14) or new (created with v16) syntax file or
output file (created with v16) a 'untitled blank data editor' file opens up
also.  I then can't run the syntax because it only wants to run it with the
blank data editor file and if I close this data editor file it closes the
syntax automatically.

Desperately seeking help to fix this problem!!!

That's probably because you're opening the files by double-clicking them, which may be launching a new instance of SPSS (with a new Data Editor window). I think this behavior was subsequently changed, but with the version you have try opening files by dragging and dropping or via the file open dialogs.

Hi Katina,

When you're opening up the syntax or output files, are you opening them by double-clicking on them, or by using File>Open in the menus? If you're double-clicking, please try opening files through the menus and let us know what happens.

Katina confirmed that she had been double-clicking to open the file, and that it worked okay when she opened it via the SPSS menus. This is the workaround for now, but the problem with opening files via double-clicking should be fixed in Release 17.0.2.
