SPSS 17 not saving!!!

Rayna Berlin
When I had to by a new computer I updated SPSS and installed V17, and I'm wishing I still had my old version! I just did several hours worth of work that I lost because when I tried to save it failed to save, and instead everything just disappeared. This has happened before, and I usually try to save more often so at least I won't lose as much work, but this time I got so engrossed in what I was doing that I forgot to. I'm really disgusted. Is anyone else having these problems with this version? I've already tried reinstalling it, and I didn't see anything online about this being a problem, though a friend did tell me that he thought all the versions after 15 were lousy.

SPSS Support-2

Rayna, I've opened a support case for you on this issue and someone will be in contact with you. The first thing they'll want to know is whether you've installed the patches for Release 17. If so, when you select Help>About, your release will be 17.0.3. If you have not applied the patches, that would be the first thing we would recommend.

Hi Rayna.  I assume you are talking about the data (.SAV) file, are you?  This will not bring back your lost data, but it will help prevent such data loss in future.  See Raynald's tip on protecting the original data:

  http://spsstools.net/spsstips.htm#SaveguardData

Also, if you make all changes & transformations to the data via syntax, then even if the data file is lost, your work is not lost (assuming you don't also lose the syntax file, and that you have safeguarded the original data file).

Re: SPSS 17 not saving!!!

mpirritano
Two habits I've adopted that seemed to have warded off data loss.

1. Always open SPSS first. Then open the file. In the past there was a
bug where opening up a file by double clicking on it caused only the
front end to open and not the back end. The back end apparently being
the part that allows you to save. My experiences with this have
permanently changed my behavior.

2. Never open an SPSS file on a network drive. Always put the data on
your desktop before opening the file.

Thanks

It is highly probable that the "desktop" on a network machine actually resides on the network! Pasting to the local drive C; (or perhaps D:) may take a little more effort and is subject to whether the MS "policies" allow acess to them

Warm regards/gary

Hi Matthew.  I've never trouble with opening or saving data files on network drives.  Is there a documented problem with that I should know about?

Thanks,

Re: SPSS 17 not saving!!!

Chris Hunt
I only ever open SPSS files over a network, and I have never had a problem!

I do agree that double clicking from Explorer often doesn't work properly.

Chris

Re: SPSS 17 not saving!!!

Lemon, John S.

We have had problems for a number of versions with SPSS not saving to student’s network drives and we have never been able to find the cause of the problem despite much time and effort. In a class of 50 one week 10 would be affected the next 45. We finally came to the conclusion it was a combination of the size of the file and the network load. Saving to a local scratch drive before saving to the network reduced the problem as well.

We have found that a fully patched version 17 is less prone to this than earlier versions – 18 also looks OK so far ( fingers crossed )

Best Wishes
