SPSS 17

Andrew Rudd
Hi All,

I've Just installed SPSS 17 today and I'm still having trouble with large tables (1300 rows by 30 Columns) taking a long time to appear and then be exported.

Is anyone else experiencing this if so is there a fix available?

Thanks
Andrew

Weeks, Kyle
Andrew, there are now much more efficient ways to accomplish this.  You can use the Output Management System to send the table directly to Excel and bypass the Viewer completely.  It seems like you are just using the Viewer as a temporary destination in order to create the Excel table.

AW: SPSS 17/Speed

willers
Good morning (in Germany),
there are a lot of notes about the speed of version 16 and version 17.
"Version 16 is slow."  "Version 17 is faster." I don't understand these
findings.
Java is slow. It's slow in Version 16, it's slow in Version 17.
E.g., to show the data dictionary of a file with 1000 Variables:
Version 15: blop, blop
Version 16,17: twenty one, twenty to....twenty seven (on German it lasts
even longer.)

To display results is slow in Version 16 and version 17, but the speed of
the statistical computing should be nearly the same in all versions. I don't
think, that there are major changes at the old kernel.
Where are the bottle necks? To display many tables is one one. There I see
no difference. Where are the others, that were removed in Version 17?

Have a nice day!

Re: AW: SPSS 17/Speed

Francien Berndsen
When I run the same syntax in V15 and in V17, V17 runs it much faster. So I
I think V17 is much faster in statistical computing. I guess it has to do
with how spss uses the processor.

I do notice the same slowness with the Java-interface, the output is slower
than in V15, but I think it's faster than in V16.

Does anyone know a way to optimize the interaction between SPSS17 Java and the printer or print server?
Does not matter which actor in the chain. Nevertheless, I need a solution to minimize printing time.

Dear dr. Weeks,

Unfortunately, there are situations where one needs to use the viewer. Both SPSS 16 and 17 are terribly slow in rendering output, especially whenever there is a large amount of it. SPSS 15 and earlier were VERY much faster. Add to this the horrible font-rendering on Windows, not using Cleartype, and the conclusion is that you have ruined a great product. In my organization, SPSS has a very strong position, but personally, I'm sticking with SPSS 15 and looking into the alternatives, because I'm not willing to accept your new JAVA-programmed interface.

In reply to this post by Andrew Rudd

There are definitely times to use the Viewer. In Andrew's original posting, he was exporting the output to another application, I was simply suggesting using the Output management System as a more parsimonious way of getting the output to his final destination. We will continue to explore ways to speed up performance in all areas.

You can try turning on anti-aliasing for the font issue.  Here are the steps from support:

Anti-aliasing can be turned on by running SPSS from a command prompt via the 'jcrun.bat' file in the main application folder.

E.g.,

>CD \Program Files\SPSSStatistics17.0

>jcrun.bat

Before running via the batch file, it is necessary to edit 'jcrun.bat' in a text editor.

1. Rename 'jcrun.bat' to 'jcrun.old'

2. Open 'jcrun.old' in a text editor

3. Modify the following:

From:

-Dswing.aatext=falseThe result seems to depend heavily on the type of display you have and perhaps the screen resolution and font.

To:

-Dswing.aatext=true

The result seems to depend heavily on the type of display you have and perhaps the screen resolution and font.

Regards.

Dear dr Weeks,

I was forced to change to SPSS17 after getting Windows 7. Your guide for turning on font-smoothing did the trick for me and made it much more comfortable to use SPSS17 on a LCD screen. Thanks!

SPSS 16 and 17 are terribly slow in rendering output, especially whenever

there is a large amount of it. SPSS 15 and earlier were VERY much faster.

Add to this the horrible font-rendering on Windows, not using Cleartype, and

the conclusion is that you have ruined a great product. In my organization,

SPSS has a very strong position, but personally, I'm sticking with SPSS 15

and looking into the alternatives, because I'm not willing to accept your

new JAVA-programmed interface.
