I have now upgraded to Statistics version 26. You can see what's new since V25 here. Among the new features - A native quantile regression procedure - Enhancements to Bayesian procedures - New statistical functions such as IDFs in MATRIX and better handling of long variable names. Also, problems with datasets in MATRIX have been resolved. - R 3.5 supported - Command Syntax Reference manual has been reformatted and is more readable. - New ROC ANALYSIS procedure - A Give Feedback item on the Help menu to communicate with Statistics product management So far, so good. |

I did not know it was all the way up to ver 26. As I mentioned, I have
ver 21. Is ver 26 beyond the limit where I can upgrade without having to pay the full price of a new version? An IBM employee once conctacted me about upgrading. I was not interested at the time and she said she would call me back when it got close to where I would have to pay the full price. Thanks Jon. Good to hear about the improvements to MATRIX, and that quantile
regression is now available as a native SPSS command (rather than via R). I expect I'll get v26 in the fall when my current license for v25 expires. I did some experiments with V26 launches on Windows 10 on my system, which has an SSD, 16GB memory, and a quad processor. After a Windows reboot, launch to DE window visibility took 49 seconds. Subsequent launches took 7 seconds. On a suspicion from IBM SPSS Development, I set the Statistics installation directory to be excluded from Windows Defender. After the reboot, launch took 9 seconds, and subsequent launches were the same. So Defender seems to be the culprit. You can exclude the Statistics installation directory from scans on launch in the Defender settings. You might want to do a one-time Defender scan first to be sure that there are no infections. Yup, that did it. I’m now running v25 on a fast Samsung NVMe SSD, 32GB, and a moderately fast gen 8 intel processor and am getting around 9 seconds initial and about 5 seconds subsequent launch. Before, it would lock up one of my two monitors for about a minute. Thanks for solving Jon. Hunting around on the net, I found a lot of complaints about Defender slowing things down. In addition to the folder exclusion I posted about earlier, you can exclude scans of specific file types in the Defender exclusion settings. It is claimed on the web that Defender blocks an app from opening a file while it scans the whole file, which is obviously bad for big files. So you might want to exclude sav files. As Jeff said, but don’t overdo it. If a virus got onto your private network, you wouldn’t want to give it free rein. BTW, in addition to excluding the sav file type, you would want to exclude zsav, too. zsav is particularly useful, since it is typically used for very large data files. Just reconfigured, Jon. Set the folder and .sps | .sav and | .zsav as
exclusions. I don't run additional virus protection but I forgot that Defender automatically runs on Windows whether you want it to or not. I rebooted to test the first and subsequent times, but the Defender changes take effect immediately, I believe. Since sps files are mostly small, I wouldn’t expect any noticeable performance effect, but sav and zsav could show more difference if they are large. Just wanted to report back on my experience after I reconfigured per Jon's
note regarding Defender, updating Windows as normally do and then restarting. At cold opening, 14 seconds for SPSS to open the editor when launched from the taskbar. That is much improved. Note that this was performed with instances of Word and Excel open. Was updating V26 w fixpaks on my Win 10 64 bit machine and when get to #6 it
failed. I looked inside the install contents of the bin folder compared to the fix and the fix contains 32 bit modules (same for both the 32 & 64 bit fixpak bin folder). When will this be corrected or is there another place can get? AFAIK, no "fixpacks" has been released for 64-bit V26. Looking for patches, I see five "interim fixes" numbered 1, 2, 3, 5, 6. If it is IF 6 you are looking at, that is a Java upgrade that applies only to the Concurrent License Manager, which you probably don't have, so you probably don't need it. My guess is that the Concurrent License Manager, which is used with Statistics and Modeler for certain kinds of licenses, is not considered a separate product but gets lumped in with Statistics and Modeler. It would be nice if the hot fixes were clearer about what they were for instead of making you download the fix and look at the readme included in the zip file.
