Dear all,
Recently, I have been assigned with creating an online survey. I browsed the SPSS website & got to know that SPSS has a service called mrInterview CATI, I wonder how this package will cost & how easy or difficult to use it. Besides, if we compare using SPSS vs other online survey tools like MS Access... what are the advantages & disadvantages. Really appreciate any advices on this. Thank you so much, Hop |

Data collection and data analysis are two different things, using SPSS for
analysis does not mean you have to use SPSS tools for your online survey data collection. There are several tools and companies that will host a survey that you program, collect the data and export the results in an SPSS format. They are generally fairly inexpensive, and there are even some free ones, but they generally don't allow alot of control over the survey design. The tool that is best for you depends on how complicated your survey is, are there any skip patterns, do you need to screen people from the survey, do you need to force people to answer certain questions etc. If you are doing a simple survey you can save yoruself alot of aggrivation by going with something like zoomerang or surveymonkey. If you need more control over survey design but don't want to host the survey on your own servers, inquisite and a couple other tools offer WISIWIG design interfaces and will host surveys for you. If hosting on your own server is not a problem, if you want real time access to data as it comes in, or you plan on sending the survey to multiple thousands of people either SPSS or Microsoft are the route to go. Sorry to muddy the waters for you instead of clarifying thigns, but what you are planning on doing changes the way you should procede from here. A little extra time planning how you will collect your data, and planning how your data will be structured will save you a great deal of time when it comes to analyzing your results. Hop,
In case you are interested in other web-based data entry software, I asked for recommendations in May 2007, so you could search for the responses with the subject line, "Web-based Data entry recommendations". Surveymonkey.com is great for surveys, maybe the best, but their files don't download well to SPSS or other data cracking programs. I have been using surveymonkey.com and then convert the files at xtremeanalytics.com. Hosting surveys on your own server is a headache, in my experience, and u don't need SPSS or MS to do thousands of people, only a email database is needed.

Folks,
Try www.openpsy.org <http://www.openpsy.org/> . It is an open source effort much cheaper than the brand name web-based programs, exports directly to SPSS, is easy to use, and offers bibliographic and statistical software packages to boot. The back end is taken care of so there is no need for programming knowledge. Although it is not a purely web based / online survey package ( it does paper and CATI/CAPI as well ) SNAP from www.snapsurveys.com produces superb surveys and with the latest version can automate start and stop dates and reminders. It produces SPSS files direct as well.

I researched the market extensively for web survey software when
deciding to bring online survey scripting in-house. There is indeed a massive range of solutions to choose from. The distinguishing factors appeared to be mainly:- Cost - from free to 'you're having a laugh' Hosting - Self-hosting (like mrInterview) or ASP (web-based) Questionnaire functionality - from very simple question-and-answer to complex, conditional based routing and much more! Scripting accessibility - pure web-based GUI, proprietary scripting language, generic scripting language (e.g. html, javascript), or combination Other - e.g. links into panel management systems, the ability to integrate conjoint software, etc. In the end we plumped for Globalpark's Surveycenter (http://www.globalpark.co.uk/). Certainly not the cheapest, but we felt it had plenty of depth of functionality to match their overpriced rivals. It outputs perfectly to SPSS. Being an ASP solution we passed on the headache of hosting and server management. It contains as much control and project management as you can handle (without being daunting) and has a sensible, intuitive web interface. Being a relatively new entrant in the field they're also keen to impress and are very supportive. -----Original Message----- From: SPSSX(r) Discussion [mailto:[hidden email]] On Behalf Of Lemon, John S.
