[SPSS] out-of-office replies and posting

Shanti Ganesh
Dear all,

after joining this list a few days ago and posting 1 message, I received
many out-of-office replies from subscribers to this list. These were send
directly to my email address, not to the list address.

Would it be possible to exclude postings from this list from your out-of-
office replies? You can do that by only sending out these automatic out-of-
office replies to emails directly sent to you only.

Also, perhaps it is an idea to include [SPSS] in all the subject headers
of posted messages, making it easier to automatically forward messages
from this list and replies to postings to a designated folder.

That would all be very helpful. Comments are welcome. Thanks!

Shanti

I too find all of the out-of-office messages very annoying.  While on the face of it Shanti's idea of including [SPSS], or perhaps [SPSSX-L] in the subject line of all posts might help in filtering out unwanted messages, the problem is that it relies on people remembering to include something in the subject line, and to get it right.  The problem is that these same people forget (or don't bother) to unsubscribe from the list when going on vacation, which is why we get all those annoying messages.  ;-)

Another solution would be for members of this list to move over to the comp.soft-sys.stat.spss newsgroup, which can be read via most news servers, and via Google Groups (http://groups.google.com/group/comp.soft-sys.stat.spss/topics).  Personally, I prefer the newsgroup format over the mailing list, which is why I read this list via www.nabble.com.  But I know that others prefer receiving the messages via e-mail.  If one subscribes to comp.soft-sys.stat.spss via Google Groups, one can choose how to read the group--i.e., via some type of e-mail, or online in a web browser.  I'm not entirely sure, but I think the mailing list and newsgroup may have been joined at one point, much like the ED-STAT mailing list and sci.stat.edu.  Perhaps Art Kendall knows about that.

Cheers,
Bruce

One can generally find something unique about the sender or the to in most list services to use as a filter to automatically move messages to a designated folder.  For example, I currently have anything that has SPSSX in the To field moved to separate folder on my inbox.  I do not believe it is necessary to ask posters to include anything special in the subject line.

Note that when subscribing to this list, you can request the list name
to appear in the subject header by adding SUBJ to the request line. If
already subscribed, sending an email with

SET SPSSX-L SUBJ

in the body to [hidden email] will change your settings to
include the list name in the subject. This is quite helpful for routing
list messages to a particular folder and for routing "out-of-office"
messages from the list to a junk folder.

I used graph instead.

I'd still like to know if it's possible to do this in gpl and how to do
it, as well as a good gpl reference.

Yes, they come directly to your e-mail. I have been screening my messages for some time so all the spssx messages go to a folder. However, the out of office messages stack up in my inbox. I am sure I will get 12 to 20 out of office emails from this post. Funny that this is the only list I belong to that generates such out of office messages.

That is so because other lists have among their rules one concerning the
out-office messages: they ask listers to suspend the receipt of messages
from the list if they have activated out of office messages.

I normally do so...

Perhaps it would be a good idea to make it mandatory: switch to NOMAIL
or DIGEST modes when setting an out of office message.

To deal with the problem I have set an out of office filter (very easy
to do with Thunderbird) that sends directly to the trash any message
with the following words in the subject line or body of the message:

Out of office
out of office
Out of Office
out of the office
Autoreplay
Abwesenheitsnotiz
Autoodpowiedz'
Dear sender
...

It takes a bit of time to set a satisfactory filter (some people are
obnoxious enough to set an out of office message that simply replies to
your message with "Re:"+original subject, those are more difficult to
catch), but right now over 90% of those annoying messages go directly to
the trash.

Re: [SPSS] out-of-office replies and posting
I have the same experience as Bruce - I have my email set up so that all post from the list goes to a separate folder - however, as soon as I post a message to the list, the out of office replies do not get sent to the designated folder but come straight to my inbox - and generally there are a considerable number

I also remember getting told that using the out of office reply may also increase the amount of spam due to it indicating a valid live email address.

The only fly in Marta's filter ointment is that SOME vacation messages (e.g., from colleagues one works with) are useful, and so should not be redirected to the trash.

The best solution, I think, would be for everyone to switch to NOMAIL or DIGEST when turning on their vacation message.  But as noted before, this only works if folks remember to do it.  ;-)

It just occurred to me that for anyone who reads the list via www.nabble.com, using a different e-mail address for posting (i.e., not one's everyday e-mail) should solve the problem.  I'll give that a try and see how it works out.

You can assign priority to each filter. I have a "SPSS list" filter that
is applied first place, then there's another that redirects all "@unav"
senders (the university where I work) to a special folder (that would
include the out of office messages from my colleagues), then the
"out-of-office", .... BTW, since many questions coming from Nabble used
to come at first from students looking for someone to do their homework
(something i dislike alot, being a teacher myself), I used to have a
filter that separated the Nabble messages from the rest (they went to
the trash... embarrassed tiny smile), but now I have eliminated it,
since you use Nabble, and your messages are well worth reading...
("errare humanum est, sed perseverare diabolicum": to err is human, but
to persist is diabolical).

That would certainly be the BEST.
