Sample Data Files - Where can I find them?

Donna Alden-Bugden
I am VERY new to SPSS and I wanted to practice with some data files. Does
anyone know where to get some data files. I found some .sps files on our
Stats Canada website, but I don't seem to know what to do with them. They
don't import as regular ascii files...they have a lot of other information
in them, like coding.
Thanks and sorry for my ignorance....I really need to buy the SPSS for
Dummy's book...

Donna

Re: Sample Data Files - Where can I find them?

In reply to this post by Donna Alden-Bugden
Hi Donna,

SPSS normally installs quite a few sample data files in the SPSS program
directory (something like c:\Program Files\SPSS\) -- this is often the
directory that SPSS starts at when you select File -> Open -> Data....
SPSS data files have an .sav extension (files with an .sps extension are
not SPSS data files but SPSS syntax files).

If you get bored with the sample files, sites like UCLA's Statistical
Computing center often post the sample files they use in training, e.g.:
http://www.ats.ucla.edu/stat/spss/dae/

Hope this helps!

Dan R.

Re: Sample Data Files - Where can I find them?

Donna Alden-Bugden
Thanks...I will take a look when I get home. I downloaded the software after
paying for it so it doesn't really come with a manual....just the help menu.
I will take a look for .sav files.

Thanks so much. Glad I'm on this list because i'm starting my doctorate and
my learning curve is steep with respect to the software. The
software appears so daunting but I suppose once I get going it will be ok.
At least it doesn't look like the old SPSS sample program I had in the
1980's...it was DOS!!!

Re: Sample Data Files - Where can I find them?

Daniel Robertson
If you're looking for introductory material, SPSS Help includes a
Tutorial and some other materials that may be useful.

Another section of the UCLA site contains some simple self-study lessons
and notes, including some movies. See
http://www.ats.ucla.edu/stat/SPSS/sk/default.htm

Raynauld's SPSS Tools (http://www.spsstools.net/) is a great resource,
albeit somewhat more advanced, and there are certainly many more. Good luck!

Re: Sample Data Files - Where can I find them?

Oliver, Richard
In reply to this post by Donna Alden-Bugden
If you are using a version of SPSS prior to SPSS 16, you can find sample files in two locations:

1. The root of the installation directory (e.g., c:\program files\spss).
2. The tutorial\sample_files directory or the installation directory (e.g., c:\program files\spss\tutorial\sample_files.

In SPSS 16, you can find sample files in the Samples directory of the installation directory.

All of the sample files used in the tutorial (Help menu>Tutorial) and in the Case Studies (Help menu>Case Studies) are located in either tutorial\sample_files or Samples (depending on the version of SPSS).

Re: Sample Data Files - Where can I find them?

Ornelas, Fermin-2
In reply to this post by Matthew Reeder
I did not want to start a discussion that could become a burden, brought by my own wording. But I was looking for something with SPSS syntax and good theoretical explanation. Instead the book just emphasizes the point and click approach. I went through a lot of problems to get it just to be disappointed. I was expecting something like Handbook for Statistical Analysis with SAS by Everitt, but no it was just a lot of verbiage on how to navigate the SPSS menu.

Hope this satisfies your question.

I have been teaching SPSS for a good number of years (too many to count) and have tried various texts. The only text that my students show a positive "bias" towards is Andy Field's Book. The book consistently gets good ratings from my students.

Books on SPSS (was RE: Sample Data Files - Where can I find them?)

ViAnn Beadle
In reply to this post by Ornelas, Fermin-2
No single book is going to satisfy the requirements of every user of SPSS
because people have widely varying backgrounds and needs. Fermin wanted
something to transfer existing knowledge of SAS syntax to SPSS. So this was
not the book for him.

Some folks will find that with the exception of getting data into the shape
required, a GUI will do just fine for them. Others will be looking for data
analysis knowledge and basic statistical techniques--the data look this, the
hypotheses are these, so what's the best way to test them and what to look
for in the output. They will need books that are specifically related to
those domains with sample syntax and discussions of domain-specific results.
It's a shame that there aren't books like the Sage monographs for them.
Others will be looking for cookbook recipes for various kinds of reports
that just describe numerically and graphically the data.

Although I haven't seen the book in question, if it is all Fermin says it
is, then that really speaks poorly for the design of the user interface,
dialogs, and accompanying help for them. Shame on me and all my fellow user
interface designers :-(

My recommendation is to talk to people who have the same kinds of jobs or
research interests that you have and get their advice.

I did not want to start a discussion that could become a burden, brought by
my own wording. But I was looking for something with SPSS syntax and good
theoretical explanation. Instead the book just emphasizes the point and
click approach. I went through a lot of problems to get it just to be
disappointed. I was expecting something like Handbook for Statistical
Analysis with SAS by Everitt, but no it was just a lot of verbiage on how to
navigate the SPSS menu.

Hope this satisfies your question.

a book evokes a harsh review. What was wrong with it?

Hi,

If your going to buy a book, the Andy Field "Discovering Statistics using
SPSS" is brilliant, has practice files, very clear and interesting.

Best of luck,

Leah

Re: Books on SPSS (was RE: Sample Data Files - Where can I find them?)

Keith McCormick
Hi All,

This could indeed become a lengthy debate, but I would like to defend
Andy Field's book brieflly. It's strength is that in addition to the
point and click, it also describes almost all the output. Folks that
are new to stats want that. There is a fear, at first, that you have
to pay equal attention to every number in the output. This is just too
much, if you already understand the underlying stats.

If I were to learn SAS, I wouldn't want every stat explained. I can
read SAS output quite well, and I don't use SAS at all. I would want
the language explained. Field's book is almost the exact opposite of
this.

So ... I would recommend Fields book - highly even - for those that
are new to stats, and new to SPSS, and that will, in time, be heavy
users of stats. If some one just wants to survive a one semester
course in Stats, there are better choices. If someone already knows
stats, but not SPSS there are better choices as well. Although good
novice syntax books seem hard to come by.

I hope that helps clarify what and who Field's book is good for.

Best, Keith

If you're looking for introductory material, SPSS Help includes a
Tutorial and some other materials that may be useful.

Another section of the UCLA site contains some simple self-study lessons
and notes, including some movies. See
http://www.ats.ucla.edu/stat/SPSS/sk/default.htm

Raynauld's SPSS Tools (http://www.spsstools.net/ ) is a great resource,
albeit somewhat more advanced, and there are certainly many more. Good luck!

In reply to this post by Ornelas, Fermin-2
Dear Fermin,

I am concerned that the list is receivign such a statement without, either
Some reason WHY
Or some reference to a negative review
Please elucidate by provide further information

Field is widely recommended to psychology students and researchers, and
while I did have some reservations about the 1st ed, ³never recommend² seems
ott.
The jokey style is not to my taste but some like it
I did not actually find any serious errors, although he may take a stand on
cotnroversial issues without mentioning that they are contoversial

Best
