Search + Replace in SPSS 20

Eric Black
I want to replace certain strings in sections of my syntax file.  Whenever I
highlight that section and use Search+Replace, I get a message that the
"search string was not found".  SPSS does find the search string in that
section when I click on "All" for search area.

Is that a bug in the software or do I need to change some settings?

Matt

I've just posted the same message

I think it's a bug, because that options works fine in v17

Try copying the syntax into a Word file, edit it, then copy it back.

John,
That is *SO* much *NOT* the point!!!
When someone spends thousands of dollars on a piece of software, reliable support for simple functions such as Search/Replace should be a given!

Merci John

That is what I am doing but it is exactly what I want to avoid - I used
TextPad up until SPSS 15 which was a very powerful editor but to the best of
my knowledge it doesn't work with SPSS 16 and higher.
I am not a programmer but I can't get my head around why the Syntax Editor
has been pretty much neglected while IBM/SPSS adds all those other bells and
whistles to the package.
I would be more than happy to use a third party software like Textpad as a
Syntax Editor if I can parse commands to SPSS but essentially forcing me to
copy/paste back and forth for a package that costs several thousands of
dollars seems odd to say the least.

Could you be a bit more specific about the failure to replace text. Simple
replacements work for me in 20.

Re: Search + Replace in SPSS 20

Eric Black
In reply to this post by Eric Black
Sure:

Search+Replacement works perfectly if I don't change the default settings.
However, at times I only need to change things in certain areas of my syntax
file, for example I have the following syntax (highly simplified).

Fre v1a v1b v1c.
Cro v1a by v1b.

I now want to have the following syntax:

Fre v2a v2b v2c.
Cro v1a by v1b.

The way to do would be to highlight the first row, hit Ctrol+H, say Replace
v1 with v2 *in selected area* and then replace all.

SPSS then tells me that it can't find search string and automatically
unselects the highlighted area (an annoying feature if I need to make more
than one change in the highlighted area).

If I then click on Replace All (no area highlighted, it will replace v1 with
v2 *in the complete syntax file*.  So it CAN find the string but somehow
highlighting it doesn't work for SPSS

Re: Search + Replace in SPSS 20

ViAnn Beadle
Here's what I just tried:

I selected a line that had two instances of "region".
I opened the S&R dialog.
I turned on the within selection radio button.
I specified region as the search string and region1 as the replacement
string.
I hit the replace all command button and got a message box that two
instances had been changed and asked to search again.
I dismissed it.
It does turn off the selection.

This whole S&R user interface was essentially copied from Word and Notepad.
In retrospect, an IDE approach where all found search strings are displayed
in a secondary window might have been a better approach but then some might
not like that either.

Thanks ViAnn

It still doesn't work for me when I do S+R in a selected area - only when I
do S+R in the "expanded area".

It was a workaround to save Matt's time, not a permanent prescription.
Researcher time (and research contract time) costs money as well!
