Search and replace in V.15 syntax

Hector Maletta
I have encountered a strange behaviour in my V.15.0.1 SPSS Syntax Editor.
Trying to find some text in a syntax file, "text not found" is returned
after "Find next", although the text is there all right and in many places.
The same happens with "Find next" in Search and Replace. But when I click on
"Replace all", all the instances are replaced correctly. Never saw this
problem in prior versions. What's going on?

Re: Search and replace in V.15 syntax

Barnett, Adrian (DECS)
Hi Hector
The 'text not found' bug existed in V14 in the Draft Viewer and editor.
Looks like it's back in V15.

Problem Subject:  FIND doesn't seem to work in the Draft Viewer

Problem Description:  I'm using SPSS 14 for Windows and I'm having
trouble with the FIND function in the Draft Viewer.

For instance, I have a Draft Viewer file that contains the text 'abc'.
If I move the cursor in the top left corner and I try to FIND (i.e. Edit
- Find ) the text 'abc' the application responds with a "Not Found"
message.

What's wrong?

Problem Subject:  Trouble with the Find/Replace function in SPSS 14.0
Syntax Editor

Problem Description:  I'm using SPSS 14.0 for Windows and I'm having
trouble with the Find/Replace function in the Syntax Editor. The one
thing that I can consistently replicate is that a string that starts in
the first character of the first line of a syntax file seems to be
invisible to the Find dialog box.

For instance, I have a syntax file that starts with a GET FILE command
in that first position, first line -- and that's the only appearance of
"get" in the file. If I try to Find (i.e., Edit->Find, or clicking the
Binoculars in the toolbar) the string "get" the application responds
with a "Not Found" message. If I then put either a single extra space or
an extra line before the GET FILE command, then the Find function can
find the "get" string. This problem is replicable -- it happens every
single time, in 14.0.1 as well.

What's wrong?

Resolution Subject: This appears to be a defect

Resolution Description:
This is a defect and has been fixed in SPSS 15.0 for Windows. As a
workaround if you have extended Find/Replaces to do as part of your
editing, you could select all the text in your syntax file, and
copy/paste to a simple text editor, such as NotePad or Programmer's File
Editor. Perform your editing and then copy/paste your edited code back
to the SPSS Syntax Editor and save.

There have been other reported issues with the Find feature in SPSS 14.0
and 15.0 that we have not been able to consistently replicate, and thus
cannot be certain have been fixed along with the other replicable
issues. One example involves a file with over 50 instances of a
particular string, but sporadically the Find/Replace dialog can only
"see" the first instance -- clicking Find Next in the dialog box does
not advance the cursor to the next instance. So far SPSS Development has
not been able to replicate this issue in a controlled environment, but
user reports indicate that closing and re-opening the syntax file does
seem to "re-set" the Find dialog's functionality. SPSS 16.0 for Windows
will use a new syntax editor and all Find/Replace functionality should
work as expected in that release.

We apologize for the inconvenience.

Re: Search and replace in V.15 syntax

Matthew Reeder
This has a been a minor, yet on-going, problem for me in v.14. More of an annoyance than anything; I just copy the syntax over to a Word doc, do whatever editing I need to there, and then copy back. Always seems to happen at very inopportune moments, though. :-)

I'm not sure if there's any validity to it because it seems rather strange, but I've heard that a patch exists to alleviate the problem, but you actually have to pay for it. Any one know if there is truth to this?

Re: Search and replace in V.15 syntax

Hector Maletta
In reply to this post by Barnett, Adrian (DECS)
Thanks, Adrian. However, the problem I encountered is not
recognized in the resolution below concerning the syntax editor. Find next
would not find even the first appearance of the text.
Now, if this was already a problem in v.14, and some of it was
corrected in v.15, it is hard to believe such a simple function could not be
corrected as well. Even simple text editors can do find and replace, and
nothing revolutionary has been done recently with the SPSS syntax editor to
justify the appearance of such a problem. I hope this is indeed solved in
v.16, but in fact the resolution said the general problem was to be solved
in v.15.

No patch, Matthew, I'm afraid. One'll have to wait for v.16,
apparently.
By the way, I hadn't noticed this new "feature" in v.14 because I
just jumped over from v.13 to v.15.

Hi

There seem to be several symptoms of this problem in v14 including find
suddenly stops working. Try shuting down and re-opening. Seems to be a
memory usage problem as it also happens on my home PC with 2Gb RAM.
Matt's suggestion is also a good one. I use Notepad.

Re: Search and replace in V.15 syntax

Maguin, Eugene
In reply to this post by Hector Maletta
Well, something exciting to look forward to when I get 15 this fall.

I'm curious about several things about this because, as others have pointed
out, 14 had a different, by maybe related, problem with Find and replace. A
problem that did not exist with 13.

Hector, was your posting the first instance that you had of this problem, or
have you had the problem since you installed 15 and patched it up and just
decided to write about this now? If the problem occurred only now and after
you had used 15 for quite a while, I wonder if the problem could be
corrected by reinstalling 15?

With 14 the problem disappeared when spss was closed. Is this true for what
you describe also?

I'm guessing that a number of people on this list were beta testers for 15
and/or for 16. I wonder if any of the beta testers encountered this problem
with 15?

Just as important and especially since several people have recently
recommended skipping 15 and waiting for 16 (due late this fall, I believe),
did any of the 16 beta testers encounter either the problem that 14 had or
the problem now described for 15?

Re: Search and replace in V.15 syntax

         Gene,
Some of your hunches were right. I restarted SPSS and the simple
FIND NEXT started to work fine. For how long I don't know yet. However, FIND
NEXT within REPLACE still does not work (OK, I tried it in the same session
after a single run of the simple FIND NEXT, but that shouldn't be cause for
trouble, should it?).
I encountered this problem in some occasions before, but I'm afraid
I have not done many searches in syntax files since I installed V.15 (which
happened only recently). Thus I do not know whether it is permanent or
occasional. I was a V.15 beta tester but do not recall seeing it in the beta
version (it could have been there anyway).
