Hello ISPSS List Serve, I am very new to using SPSS and I have a problem that I
cannot seem to find an answer for within the SPSS textbooks and online
documents. I have 125 results in a column and need to create a new column where
the results are coded within four ranges. I have a column with 125 cells of
data with responses ranging from 0 to 28. I need to develop a new column where
the results are displayed in this format. “Exp_Results” 0 will be displayed in a new column
as 0.00 “Exp_Results” numbers in cells to the value of 1
to 2 will be displayed in the new column as 1.00 “Exp_Results” numbers in cells to the value of 3
to 7 will be displayed in the new column 2.00 “Exp_Results” number in the cells to the value
of equal to and greater than 8 will be displayed in the new as 3.00. What formula do I need to put into SPSS and what tabs do I
need to click on to be able to write in and activate the formula? I would
greatly appreciate your assistance as I have already spent over a full day
trying to work this simple thing out. Kind Regards Lionel |

Hi Lionel, What you are looking for is the ‘Recode into Different Variables’
procedure in the Transform menu. Once you have selected ‘Exp_Results’ variable
and entered in a name for the new variable that is to be created, click the ‘Old
and New Values’ button. This is where you can enter in the recode rules as you
listed in your email. Eg, Old Value: 0 / New Value: 0. Add. Range: 1 through 2 / New Value: 1. Add. Range: 3 through 7 / New Value: 2. Add. Range, value through HIGHEST: 8 / New Value 3. Add. Click Continue and OK and it will create a new variable in your
data file that takes the values 0-3 as defined above. Hope this helps. Cheers, Kylie. From: SPSSX(r)

Lionel ... You should create a new variable
using something like this ...
RECODE
Exp_Results (MISSING=COPY) (0=0) (1 THRU
2=1) (3 THRU 7=2) (8 THRU HI=3)
(ELSE=SYSMIS) INTO Exp_Results_Cat. Art ------------------------------------------------------------------ Art Burke Evaluation Advisor Phone: 503-275-9592 /
