I just wrote, for another posting, "SPSS release numbers are
maddening." There have been at least three series of release numbers, and I suspect a fourth: 1. The original releases for the 'mainframe' (IBM 360/370) when that's all there was: release 1 (I suppose) through release 9. 2. SPSSX: A major rewrite and extension for 'mainframes' and, I think, the Digital Equipment Corporation VAX; numbered release 1, but going how far I don't know. 3. The one I'm not sure of: SPSS-PC, later SPSS-PC+, for personal computers. They must have had release numbers, but I've no idea how many releases there were. 4. SPSS for Window, Mac, etc.; the series we know and love. The series extends, now, to release 16 (coming soon). But I don't know whether releases of SPSS for Windows started numbering from 1 again, or continued the series of release numbers from where SPSS-PC/PC+ left off, or what. It would be nice to have a table of all releases, with release numbers, with release series (SPSS, SPSSX, etc.), release dates, and new features introduced. (The last sounds like trouble, but it shouldn't be, as the release announcements always had lists of features added.) ....... Cheers for cleaning up records, Richard |

The numbering of SPSS for Windows started with version 5, coming after SPSSX 4.

Richard,
To add a couple of data points to the discussion regarding PC versions of SPSS, I have SPSS/PC+ diskettes dated 22 Jan 92. These are labeled V4.0.1 If memory serves SPSS 6.0 was the first Windows version and the starting point for the series of releases in circulation now. This still leaves versions 1 through 3 and number 5 unaccounted for, but hope this helps a bit. Richard and others,
Wasn't there a mainframe version of spss that came out in either the late 80's or really early 90's that was called 4 or 4.1? I remember the manual cover being was mainly white with red horizontal band at the top, the bottom or both. It was full-size, i.e., maybe 8.5x11. It wasn't spss-X. That came out in the early 80's I think and had a full size manual with a mainly dark blue cover and maybe red or white lettering with the 'X' being kinda prominent. Gene Maguin |

There was also a version 6 for 'mainframes' ( included in there are different 'flavours of UNIX ).
I think the numbering started with SPSSX with the 'X' being dropped around release 2 of 'X'. As far as I can remember some people said the 'X' meant eXtended whereas others were of the opinion that it was the roman numerial for 10 and was used because somewhere in the code the name of the software was allocated only 5 characters. I favour the former not the latter !!! Best Wishes John S. SPSS-X 3 was followed by SPSS 4, which was followed by the first Windows release, SPSS 5. SPSS-X was actually SPSS 10, which would make SPSS-X 2 actually SPSS 11, which makes SPSS 16 actually SPSS 25. At least, I think that's how it goes.
SPSS/PC+ had an independent version numbering system that stopped somewhere around 5. -----Original Message----- From: SPSSX(r) Discussion [mailto:[hidden email]] On Behalf Of Gene Maguin Sent: Monday, August 13, 2007 2:58 PM To: [hidden email] Subject: Re: Suggest: List of SPSS releases, with dates Richard and others, Wasn't there a mainframe version of spss that came out in either the late 80's or really early 90's that was called 4 or 4.1? I have SPSS-X books for Release 2 (1986, 2nd ed.) and Release 3 (1988,
written by Marija Norusis). My collection of PC+ books starts with v 4 (1990) The book makes reference to vertsion 3.1. My pride and joy is a heavily taped up Second Ed of the original SPSS manual from 1975. My God, I was in 5th grade when this book came out. This manual makes reference to the first edition, published in 1970. I have at least 1 SPSS for Windows manual back dating back to Release 6 (1993) except for 11 and 12. *************************************************************************************************************************************************************** Mark A. There was indeed the manual as you describe. Have it on my desk. The
syntax described within was for "IBM PC, PS/2, and compatabile computer running O/2, Apple Macintosh computers, workstations, minicomputers, and larger systems under UNIX and VAX/VMS. There is NO version number on this manual. It's about 1.5" thick. Inside it says," As of Release 4 (the successor to SPSS-X Release 3) most versions of the software contain ..." It was copyrighted 1990. I've kept that one because it was the last best consolidation of syntax. Dates me! Cheers, Necia A. Hi All,
We at Deutsche Post are using different SPSS Versions for Windows computers. Thus we need to know which version has which command set to be able to run the programs with all versions. Therefore we suggested to SPSS documentation department to extend the existing SPSS docs with information on the commands and sub commands available for each version. .. and SPSS for Windows followed the version line of the main SPSS
releases that came through mainframes , SPSS->SPSS-X->SPSS (again), and into OS/2 (remember that?) and Mac. SPSS/PC+ had its own version numbers which reflected the fact that it was quite different in a number of ways (including syntactically). Like a branch line of the main railway. A cul-de-sac as we say in the UK. SCSS was another cul-de-sac. The "C" stood for "Conversational" I believe. In the upcoming version 16, all commands that have been added or changed since SPSS 12 will have a release history section, describing the changes in each release, and there will be a consolidated release history section for all commands in the Introduction chapter of the Command Syntax Reference.

I'm not exactly sure but I'd guess around 1992 or so. IIRC, the first full
version available on an IBM PC was initially targeted for OS/2 and but we know who won that OS battle. We couldn't deliver all of SPSS until virtual memory was available in the OS. -----Original Message----- From: SPSSX(r) Discussion [mailto:[hidden email]] On Behalf Of Art Kendall Sent: Tuesday, August 14, 2007 10:22 AM To: [hidden email] Subject: Re: Suggest: List of SPSS releases, with dates When was SPSS for PC but not SPSS/PC 1) Announced and 2) available?
