Hello all,
I was just wondering if anyone could possibly help...I am an undergrad student currently doing my honours project and new to SPSS. I did my questionnaire on Qualtrics and have managed to get it to SPSS fine. On my questionnaire I asked the respondent their nationality and to also state their supervisors nationality. This is 2 separate variables on SPSS, I am now trying to make a new variable which will allow me to put the information together for example Please specify your nationality 1= Indian 2= Filipino 3= British Please Specify your supervisors nationality 1= Indian 2= Filipino 3= British I want the new variable to show that if the respondent is 1 (indian) and their supervisor is 1 (indian) then in the new variable it would show as 1 and 1 = 1 (which would mean they are of the same nationality, both indian) OR in some cases respondent is 2 (filipino) and their supervisor is 1 (Indian) therefore in the new variable it would be 1 and 3 = 2 (which would mean nationalities are different, respondent is Filipino and supervisor is Indian. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!! |
You need to do a transformation to a new variable. Read the SPSS manual. Sent from my iPhone

Hello Gemma. I'm curious about why you want to do that. What do you intend to do with the combined variable? What is your research question, and how do you intend to address it? If you are interested in the interaction between those two variables, you can address that question without creating a combined variable.

Hello Bruce,
My research is to see if culture (one's nationality) has an impact on leadership in the cruise industry, in terms of crews perceptions of their supervisor (leader). I asked respondents to rate statements (based on previous literature into leadership by Hofstede and House et al) on a 5 point likert (strongly agree- strongly disagree) and I also asked respondents to state their own nationality and the nationality of their supervisor. I am now trying to analyse my data to see if when the respondent is of the same nationality of their supervisor their perspectives are altered and vice versa and to do this I thought I would need to create a variable that shows when nationalities are the same or not the same (with all possible combinations of nationalities). So I think I need to see if those two variables combined impact upon the statements. I hope this makes sense! Thanks |

I am not familiar with Hofstede and House et al. From what you've said, it sounds like you may get a score (or scores) by summing (or averaging) 5-point items. Is that correct? If so, the scores are probably close enough to interval scale that you can compute means & SDs, and use ANOVA models. If that is so, then rather than combine your two variables into a single variable, run a two-way ANOVA with both variables and their interaction. If you are not familiar with such models from your course work, then you have some reading to do. Take a look at David Lane's Hyperstat notes, for example. You can use Google to find them. Google will also help you find plenty of websites that show how to run that type of model with SPSS.

Hi Gemma,
There are potentially a number of ways you could analyze this type of data to answer your research question (or dissertation!). And in most cases its ANOVA that will be of use. So with that in mind, you could either, group respondents depending on whether they are of the same nationality or not (i.e. cases where respondent is of same nationality to supervisor) and test if perceptions of leadership scores are equal between these groups or not. Or alternatively, you could append Hofstede national metric scores to your data. Knowing the respondents and supervisors nationality could use Hofstedes metrics to create "differences in culture" metrics and use these in an ANOVA, with your grouping variable being respondents of high vs low perceptions of leadership? Given you have mentioned Hofstedes model it's likely the latter you may want to explore. The former approach doesn't necessarily need to involve Hofstedes metrics, if I have understood correctly. Hope that helps, Jignesh On 7 April 2013 18:47, Bruce Weaver <[hidden email]> wrote: I am not familiar with  Hofstede and House et al.  From what you've said, it |

http://spssx-discussion.1045642.n5.nabble.com/Undergraduate-Dissertation-HELP-PLEASE-tp5719301p5719305.html Gemma should not be combining the two variables into one. Rather, she should be running a two-way ANOVA. HTH.

Apologies. JointNationality and JointNatl should have the same name.
In any case, use John Hall's code instead. COMPUTE JointNationality = 2. IF (EgoNatl = SupNatl) JointNationality=1. Hi John. I agree that it is wise to examine descriptive stats first. But why is the "combination" variable needed? Crosstabulation of the two original variables would provide the same information as your FREQUENCIES command using the combined variable, would it not?
My point was that even though Gemma asked how to compute a combined variable, she doesn't need it to do the analysis she ought to be doing. (Art K might say that the presenting problem is not the real problem, or something like that.) Cheers, Bruce
