Using Weights with MVA

Yvonne Montejano-2

Hi folks,

Can anyone tell me if we should be applying weights to a dataset prior to running an MVA syntax?  Or, should weights be applied to the final dataset once missing values are filled?  I’m not sure if it makes a difference.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Great question!

I think it would make a difference.

I would weight the data prior to the MVA or include the weighting variables as covariates.

Either approach should have the same effect.

Weights should be applied before missing values are filled because it affects the pattern of missingness.

Yvonne,

I think you should read the syntax reference carefully and then do some experimental runs for the following reason

Weight command:

Weight values do not need to be integer, and some procedures, such as FREQUENCIES,

CROSSTABS, and CTABLES, will use fractional values on the WEIGHT variable. However,

most procedures treat the WEIGHT variable as a replication weight and will simply round

fractional weights to the nearest integer. Some procedures ignore the WEIGHT variable

completely, and this limitation is noted in the procedure-specific documentation.

I searched the MVA section for ‘weight’ and did not find that it appeared.

I think it would be a mistake to treat weighting variables as covariates.
