I just started becoming a regular user of version 19. Do you have to be online to use the syntax help? In previous versions, I was able to click the "syntax help" and an index of help topics would pop up. Now syntax help goes online. I
don't always happen to be online when working in spss. Do i need to install something else to get the sytax help within the program?
Thanks
Carol

It's not online; it just looks that way.
It's launching a help file on your local machine.

Hi Carol,
The help opens in a browser, but it's a local copy installed with SPSS. Note that the syntax reference PDF should also be in the installation directory. Really? It's pulling up a window in IE explorer and taking
forever to load. From: Rick Oliver [mailto:[hidden email]] Sent: Friday, November 11, 2011 11:10 AM To: Parise, Carol A. Cc: [hidden email] Subject: Re: Version 19 syntax help - only online? Eclipse help runs in a browser window.
Since the help system is quite large, it takes some time to load the first
time you launch the help during a session. After that, it should load very
quickly.

I too am surprised to hear that the Help files are stored locally, because my experience has been the same as Carol's--i.e., compared to v18 and before, it is unbelievably slow to load. Being a bit of a skeptic, I unplugged my network cable before clicking on Help - Topics. Sure enough, it did load. So, I guess the moral of the story is to load the Help right away when you start a new session.
Cheers, Bruce

Hi Carol,
No, i can get a version of help on my unplugged laptop. I think it is the full 'connect-to-ibm' version but i'm not quite sure. If it is that's nice because i don't think that microsoft gives a full version of help on the 2010 programs like access. Actually, other than checking for the license code--a big deal, i'm sure, i don't quite see the point of forcing a connect to the server. Gene Maguin On Fri 11/11/11 1:48 PM , "Parise, Carol A." I am currently out of the office and will return on Tuesday August 16. I have limited email availability during that time. I look forward to reading your email and responding when I return. Thank You! |

After i sent a reply i saw that many others had already replied. Sorry.
But, I too, am curious as to what is happening when spss starts on an unplugged machine. As near as i can remember the first time i started spss, it seemed as though it wanted to go out on the web to somewhere and the it seems odd to me that the browser address when help is loaded seems to be a valid internet address. And, while i'm curious (and bitching) i don't quite see now the new help system is an improvement over the old version. Carol Just now, 25 seconds for menu to fill (15 seconds for the text in the right pane) but my computer is quite fast (Windows7 Pro, 32-bit, Intel Core i3 CPU 540 @ 3.07 GHz). It’s a bit slower if I’m editing films from TV to DVD, but a lot faster than my 1965 Algol program’s 40 mins cpu for a 2 x 3 crosstab (program, data and output on paper tape) on an English Electric KDF9! I’m copying this to the list, but without the screenshots. John From: Parise, Carol A. I recommend you totally forget SPSS 19 and jump to SPSS 20…it is far more smoother than 19…19 looked like to be coded by IBM programmers in East Asia and/or India working for 2 cents/day!!!
