Again!
KTBM> Dear Srs please get me out of the SPSS list. We CAN'T. You should do it by yourself. This is a copy of the wellcome message you received when you subscribed to this list. Instructions to keep it (that you didn't follow, see 1sr paragraph) as well as information on how to proceed to quit the list are fully explained. I'll save you the working of reading it all. This is what you must do to leave the list (4th paragraph of the wellcome message): "You may leave the list at any time by sending a "SIGNOFF SPSSX-L" command to [hidden email]." Please, notice that you should NOT send the SIGNOFF command to all of us ([hidden email]), but to a slightly different address ([hidden email]) ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Copy of the full wellcome message: Your subscription to the SPSSX-L list (SPSSX(r) Discussion) has been accepted. Please save this message for future reference, especially if this is the first time you are subscribing to an electronic mailing list. If you ever need to leave the list, you will find the necessary instructions below. Perhaps more importantly, saving a copy of this message (and of all future subscription notices from other mailing lists) in a special mail folder will give you instant access to the list of mailing lists that you are subscribed to. This may prove very useful the next time you go on vacation and need to leave the lists temporarily so as not to fill up your mailbox while you are away! You should also save the "welcome messages" from the list owners that you will occasionally receive after subscribing to a new list. To send a message to all the people currently subscribed to the list, just send mail to [hidden email]. This is called "sending mail to the list," because you send mail to a single address and LISTSERV makes copies for all the people who have subscribed. This address ([hidden email]) is also called the "list address." You must never send a command to that address, as it would be distributed to all the people who have subscribed. All commands must be sent to the "LISTSERV *server* address," [hidden email]. You may leave the list at any time by sending a "SIGNOFF SPSSX-L" command to [hidden email]. Contributions sent to this list are automatically archived. You can get a list of the available archive files by sending an "INDEX SPSSX-L" command to [hidden email]. You can then order these files with a "GET SPSSX-L LOGxxxx" command, or using LISTSERV's database search facilities. Send an "INFO DATABASE" command for more information on the latter. This list is available in digest form. If you wish to receive the digested version of the postings, just issue a SET SPSSX-L DIGEST command. More information on LISTSERV commands can be found in the LISTSERV reference card, which you can retrieve by sending an "INFO REFCARD" command to [hidden email]. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- (taken from Richard Ristow: "I will not sit down and cry, I will NOT sit down and cry...") Hector and Friends:
I support the idea of a line at the end of every mail received from the list that might state something like this: "You may leave the list at any time by sending a "SIGNOFF SPSSX-L" Command to [hidden email]." I can guarantee fewer "take me out" messages, but working with all kind of users I can predict with a 100% accuracy that the list will keep getting this kind of messages, and the occasional GET ME OUT sent to SPSS-L!!! There are two solutions that came to mind: either you manage to
send (by yourself or through the IT person in your workplace) the SIGNOFF message from your predecessor's address, OR you designate the list server messages as spam. Or perhaps, as a remedy of last resort, you may pray that some Deus ex machina from UGA.EDU may read about your plight and intervene on your behalf. Eugenio is right--the requests won't stop. However, I hypothesize that
people who want to get off this list don't read the email from this list--that's why they want to get off the list. Putting a tagline in the message won't really cut down on these annoying requests. -----Original Message----- From: SPSSX(r) Discussion [mailto:[hidden email]] On Behalf Of Eugenio Grant Sent: Wednesday, June 13, 2007 11:49 AM To: [hidden email] Subject: Re: Hear, hear!! You may be able to do it through the list's Web site, http://www.listserv.uga.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=spssx-l&A=1 If not, the list administrator for SPSSX-L (and other lists hosted at UGA.EDU) is "Jean Snow, UGA Listserv Admin" <[hidden email]> She has authority to cancel subscriptions. You'll have to give her whatever authentication she requests. TO ALL: Jean Snow is very helpful, but also very busy. Mail to her should be the *last* resort, not the first. |

Except that SPSSX-L is not spam. Legitimate mailing lists like this are
opt-in; the user signed up to receive these messages. Declaring legitimate messages as spam "confuses" adaptive filtering and mailer reputation software designed to block actual spam. Worst case scenario is where many people declare SPSSX-L messages as spam and listserv.uga.edu gets put on a blacklist and causes Jean and others much grief.
