Eric,
I assume, perhaps incorrectly, that you wrote the get data syntax rather than going through the menu setup. I think your problem is that you have specified invalid variable names. Embedded blanks have not been allowed (but perhaps 17 is different)--and you have plenty of variable names like that. Change the embedded blank to underscore '_' and see if you get the same error. Eric: It looks like you have a mixture of variable labels mixed in
with variable names. E.G. Womens
age 70-71 F2.0 This looks like the label for V21. It is being read as the
name for variable, but “Womens age” is invalid. Spaces are
not allowed in variable names. Try editing the syntax to use valid variable names. You
can add the variable labels afterwards. --jim From: SPSSX(r) Discussion

That, and I think you are limited to 8 characters in a variable NAME,
unless that has changed recently. It does not say that in the Help file, but none of the variables names in the example are greater than 8 characters. It seems like you have variable names and "labels" on the input command set of variables. You go along with the standard V1, V2, V3,... V20, and then instead of the expected V21 there is Womans age. Then this happens with other variables periodically, where V41, V43, V45 etc. might be expected. I'd put in the missing Vxx, variable names and then write Variable Labels to say what they are about if that is desired.. FWIW. Cheers, Necia A. Variable names can be up to 64 bytes long. In English, 64 bytes is usually 64 characters. I think the limit was raised from 8 to 64 in release 12.
You are correct that variable names cannot contain blanks. -----Original Message----- From: SPSSX(r) Discussion [mailto:[hidden email]] On Behalf Of necia Sent: Wednesday, April 15, 2009 12:00 PM To: [hidden email] Subject: Re: help with 'get data' error That, and I think you are limited to 8 characters in a variable NAME, unless that has changed recently. Hello,
Earlier today my professor sent a question to this listserve asking about a 'get data' error. This is actually for a secondary analysis project I am working on. I took the advice that was sent out to
me to change the variable names but unfortunately it hasn't worked. I'm hoping someone can help me out. I am using SPSS 17.0. I did not put this syntax in myself it if a result of the command tree that I went through to sort the data fields. The data came
from a txt. file but the fields were not defined. I had to put lines in to define the fields.
Here is the syntax and the error code I get.
GET DATA
TYPE=TXT. FILE='C:\Users\Tara\Desktop\PNSS.txt'. FIXCASE=1. ARRANGEMENT=FIXED. FIRSTCASE=1. For starters, remove all the periods at the ends of lines in the GET DATA command. A period at the end of a line is interpreted as a command terminator. From: SPSSX(r) Discussion on behalf of Trudnak, Tara Sent: Wed 4/15/2009 9:25 PM To: [hidden email] Subject: help with 'get data' error Hello,
Earlier today my professor sent a question to this listserve asking about a 'get data' error. This is actually for a secondary analysis project I am working on. I took the advice that was sent out to me to change the variable names but unfortunately it hasn't worked. I'm hoping someone can help me out. I am using SPSS 17.0. I did not put this syntax in myself it if a result of the command tree that I went through to sort the data fields. The data came from a txt. file but the fields were not defined. I had to put lines in to define the fields.
Here is the syntax and the error code I get.

I believe you also need to add “/” before the
subcommands. Also, V176 is duplicated and there isn’t a V177.

Tara Hello,
Earlier
today my professor sent a question to this listserve asking about a 'get data'
error. This is actually for a secondary analysis project I am working
on. I took the advice that was sent out to me to change the variable names
but unfortunately it hasn't worked. I'm hoping someone can help me out. I am
using SPSS 17.0. I did not put this syntax in myself it if a result of the command
tree that I went through to sort the data fields. The data came from a txt.
file but the fields were not defined. I had to put lines in to define the
fields. Here
is the syntax and the error code I get. GET
