I hate the thought of going through the IBM web site for this - so anyone know how to 'move' a install of SPSS v14 from one machine to a new one? I will be junking the old machine. After installing and running the authorization program, I get a response like 'you are not allowed to generate any more new licenses.' And, yes, I know you are asking why install v14? Reason - I have a license for Tables for that and can't get my job to buy one for the newer version. |
I had to transfer 19.0 from one laptop to
another. There is a contact number on the IBM site somewhere. Once i did,
they opened up a ticket and they provided a new download
link somehere on the website.
But, I also have
version 14 and would like to keep it but they don't support it anymore and
wouldn't provide me with a new license code for this.

First they refuse to make patches for "legacy" versions publicly available, now this.
What brilliant customer service. :-|

The current IBM model is not a license to own the software in a traditional sense. In essence the current marketing approach is one of leasing the use of the software. So you are not purchasing the software per se, but rather an active window of time to operate it. In terms of the company side there are a number of benefits to it as you can imagine. One of these is that there is little need to offer support of any type to products which are not leased. One can however focus on current products only and theoretically provide more direct service to the current product base. Thus providing better quality serve for the active customers. We might see this, as end users, somewhat differently. This market approach, when combined with the various special "modules" model and relative costs of each module (started by SPSS prior to IBM but continued by them) were the major reasons I have elected to primarily use other products. While the "support literature" outside IBM/SPSS i!
s relatively large these other factors have made ROI for it for me untenable. Ditto for my versions 11 and 15 (sitting there on CD). I'm currently using
19, but for how long? What on earth is their point? Greed? All I'm trying to do is write tutorials, but they keep changing things. CORR(SUM($$$,$$$,$$$)/GREED,LTCUSTSAT) *<<<* 0.
It's a marketing decision! Don't expect a human to understand!!! I'm actually quite content with my perpetual (ALL options) ver 11.5. What has been added since then which I *REALLY* need? OMS? Cute, but I was writing code against pivot tables over 15 years ago. I could build my own OMS parser in VB in 1 day! Python? Who the F#@< needs it? It can make some things easier perhaps but ... Fancy Syntax editor? I proposed an Intellisense like feature for SPSS in 1996 and everyone thought I had taken LSD or something over the weekend. Long Variable names? YES! That is actually something quite useful. OTOH: I recall DOS which was limited to 8.3 filenames! Maybe a few things in statistics like Missing Value Analysis, GenLinMixed, Polytomous Logistic but I RARELY if ever have any need for them. ROFLMFAO!

DM: "I'm actually quite content with my perpetual (ALL options) ver 11.5."
It sounded as if the OP also has a perpetual license for a "legacy" version. Have you tried moving your 11.5 from one computer to another lately, David? How does that work? Some of the post 11.5 additions I've found useful are: - GENLIN - MIXED (I've not yet tried GenlinMixed) - Multiple Imputation for missing values - NOMREG (polynomial logistic regression) - OMS YMMV, as Art K might say. ;-) I do agree that 11.5 was a very good version, by the way. Very stable, as I recall.

Good luck!
IIRC: there is a 'tethered to this machine blah blah blah... in the install, in which case you're likely SOL. If you haven't nuked the old box *MAYBE* you can uninstall EVERYTHING except the OS and SPSS and then build a clone of the system and move it to a bootable partition on the new machine. It will probably kick you in the A$$, but worth a try! I refuse to get into any details on this but Google is your friend!!! HTH, David. ---
