Dear friend

Simply create codes for each answer. Employees can select more than one question? If matterin order to create a flag that bears marking or not marking each of the propositions.

You need to divide this up into a number of subquestions for each symptom, and then use the three choices as a response for each symptom.

In reply to this post by Ayman
This is a series of questions even though it may be numbered of questions of the data gathering form.

you would have a variable for each possible response.
You would need multiple dichotomies _if_ the person could answer e.g., both before and after starting shift work.
that would give number of conditions times three dichotomous variables.

If the responses categories are necessarily exclusive (you might add a "Both" response if that is relevant), then you would have as many variables as there are conditions with one value from the list of responses.

if you have not yet done the data gathering, think about rephrasing about asking something like frequency  before and after.
You might put a time limit on the "before" question, e.g., month or two months.

Re: i need help in Analyzing with SPSS

In reply to this post by Ayman
Since your instructions did not say to tick only 1 per row, you may  need to have  columns for each variable "backaches_before" to "Sprains_never".
that would be 33 dichotomous variables.

If you have few enough forms that you can edit before data entry
then you could have a new category "both"
value labels backaches to sprains
 1 'Both'
 2 'before'
 3 'after'
 4 'never'.

If you used an online system that only allowed one per row of the matrix question or visually scanning tells you that nobody answered both before and after
value labels backaches to sprains
  1'before'
  2 'after'
  3 'never'
.

Re: i need help in Analyzing with SPSS

John F Hall
In reply to this post by Ayman
How big will your sample be?  Have you done the survey yet?

If it's only a small scale study you have time to change the questionnaire
like Art suggested.

You need an extra box for each item, eg:

Never    Before only    After only   Both before
                                                   and after
  0        1              2              3

You can worry about SPSS later, but if you don't collect the data in the way
you need, SPSS won't recover it for you.

Can you design a data capture instrument like the ones on my website?  I
used a short questionnaire at the beginning of a course which asked fro
previous experience of computing, statistics etc and also replicated a few
questions from a data set to be used on the course.

These are right at the beginning of Block1: From questionnaire to SPSS saved
file.

There's a complete course in using SPSS to capture, manage and analyse data
from questionnaire surveys: it's aimed precisely at people like yourself.

Get back to me if you need any further help.

OK, but all may not be lost if people have ticked more than one box on each
line.  You'll need a coding scheme which takes my previous advice into
account and a transfer sheet or a lot of patience to enter the data.  If you
send me a copy of your full questionnaire I can help you more, but have a
look at the pre-course questionnaire and data transfer sheet on my website
to give you some idea of what you might need.

I've dealt with hundreds of students and clients in your position and the
sooner you seek detailed help the better.  I can advise you, but I won't do
the work for you.

60 is no big deal for you to do manually.  Send me the questionnaire
instrument as an attachment and I'll see what I can do for you in the way of
a transfer sheet for direct entry to SPSS.

Re: i need help in Analyzing with SPSS

Art Kendall
In reply to this post by Ayman
You may not be able to modify the questions as asked, but if some people answered both before and after you can use values for your variables that take that into account.

How to take those kinds of answers into account depends on the medium your data is recorded on and how many respondents you have.

How was the data recorded?
How many respondents do you have

You could have all of the data entered with 11 variables with valid 4 response values and a value indicating missing.
(be sure that you have the data keyed twice or have it keyed once had have it proofread.)

In reply to this post by John F Hall
dear Mr.John F Hall

below is a brief explanation of my methodology to analyze
This is how i was thinking to analyze the questionnaire;i will divide the questions in two groups

Group 1 will be factors of effects

-          Health

-          Social

-          Sleep

Group 2 will be factors of shift work

-          Age

-          Work load

-          Working hours

-          And since when he is doing shift work

First to do is to analyze each group by itself and come up with numbers, doing reliability test and all with SPSS. The next thing i was thinking to do is to do multi regression test and correlations test again with SPSS if possible

the other sections like YOUR ROSTER, OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY HAZARDS and GENERAL COMMENTS are for other purposes or either demographic fata

and yes sir i understand , and im not here to give my work for someone else to do, what i aim is to find the best way to analyze this questionnaire and came with somthing valuable and real and your valuable advice is important for me sir
