Dear SPSS-users,

While exploring differences between SPSS20 and SPSS21 I run into a difference in merging files. If I use the same menu-instructions to merge two files, the result in SPSS20 is different from the result in SPSS21.

More specific:

Big.sav contains:

recnr v1 v2

1        1  2

2        1  1

3        2  4

4        3  2

5        1  4

Small.sav contains:

Recnr  v3

5         4

6         1

7         3

After first loading Big.sav I choose: Data > Merge Files > Add Variables

An external SPSS statistics data file (small.sav)

Mark: Match cases on key variables in sorted files

Mark: both files provide cases

Move recnr to the Key Variables part

In SPSS20 this give me the following data:

recnr v1 v2 v3

1        1  2  .

2        1  1  .

3        2  4  .

4        3  2  .

5        1  4  4

6        .  .   1

7        .  .   3

Just as I expected. But in SPSS21 this gives:

recnr v1 v2 v3

1        1  2  .

2        1  1  .

3        2  4  .

4        3  2  .

5        1  4  .

A bug?

By pasting the syntax I noticed that the old MATCH FILES syntax is replaced by new sql-like syntax STAR-JOIN.

I know that I can still use the MATCH FILES syntax in SPSS21, but a lot of our users rather use the GUI to match files.

Any suggestions?

Kind regards, Gerard van Meurs

Gerard,
I never use dialogs for merging and rarely for anything else.
*BUT*  I recall that there were a number of 'features' in STAR-JOIN that were un-discombulated with the fix pack from about a month or so ago.  Seek out the patch within the IBM Labyrinth.  Other than that?
Anyone have any words as to why I would use STAR-JOIN rather than ADD FILES?
I know nothing of the function but if there are advantages (performance wise or other) I would love to get the 411.
