I have what I hope is an easy question for someone.
I'm changing the default look of my pivot tables and there are two things I would like to do:
1) Display the commas in numbers i.e. 1,200 versus 1200
2) Add parentheses in around the percents in a crosstabulation table. The format 'Academic' displays the frequencies and percents just how i would like them to i.e. 20 52% but i would like to have them look like this 20 (52%)
It is easy to do #1 above by clicking on cell properties but I haven't figured out how to make this 'stick' as the default table format. When i go into TableLooks, i don't have the option of a cell properties box.
thanks
Carol

For #1, if you have V20 or maybe it was
V19, you can just set a preference item for using digit grouping. No
tableLook involved.
Since #2 is not a known format for pivot tables, you would have to use scripting directly or with SPSSINC MODIFY TABLES to change the % items to use parentheses (unless you are going to edit each cell by hand :-( ) Jon Peck (no "h") aka Kim Senior Software Engineer, IBM [hidden email] new phone: 720-342-5621 From: "Parise, Carol A." <[hidden email]> To: [hidden email] Date: 03/15/2012 04:47 PM Subject: [SPSSX-L] modifying default cell properties for pivot tables Sent by: "SPSSX(r) Discussion" <[hidden email]> I have what I hope is an easy question for someone. I'm using version 20. I see now that #2 was the format for
the "Case processing Summary not the actual crosstabs
table.
For #1. Where is the digit grouping preference found?

Ahhh - I've been though that menu a dozen times, i had no
idea that "apply locale's digit grouping format to numeric values"
meant "add the comma to values over 1,000".
One more question on modifying output:
I changed the colors for categories under Options - Charts
-Style Cycles - Color. However, i don't see how to change the background fill of
charts to be clear as in the older versions. The "Fills" option only
applies to fill styles for different categories.
many thanks!

I have a blog post about changing the background color here, http://andrewpwheeler.wordpress.com/2012/01/03/hacking-the-default-spss-chart-template/
You can't do it through the menu's as far as I'm aware (you need to do it through the chart template). There only ends up being one item in the base chart template that needs to be changed though, so that part is pretty easy. Another way would be to generate said chart, change the background color to whatever, save that template, and then apply that same template to a new chart. Andy W |
Andy,
Thanks for the link to your blog post. I was able to change the line color though the option that Jon Peck mentioned in the comment of theblog. For changing the background to transparent for all charts I run in SPSS, how do i actually open up the .sgt file? I ran a chart, changed the background to transparant and then went to save it as a new template but will that make every style of chart that I run have a transparent background? Does it save it as the default template? How are you creating your charts? If you use something that GGRAPH, then you
can explicitly specify a particular chart template via syntax. If you are creating charts through other procedures like REGRESSION, then you can use a SET command to point to a specific template before running the procedure and resetting to the default after the procedure. But I may be confused here because the topic seems to be about default cell properties for tables and not charts. -----Original Message----- From: SPSSX(r) Discussion [mailto:[hidden email]] On Behalf Of Parise, Carol A. As ViAnn said, you can either set the template globally for all charts, or set templates for individual charts when you generate those specific charts. To set it globally you can either do it through the GUI (on the same page where you set the line color), or you can do it in syntax pretty easily. Below is an example.

If all you want to do is to permanently
change the background color to white for all charts, you can modify the
default chart template. It is named chart_style.sgt, and it lives
in the template subdirectory of your Statistics installation.
It is an xml file, so you can edit it in any plain text editor. Make a copy first. Then look for this text <!-- Set the inner graph frame style (where the chart data is plotted) to a gray background --> <style number="1" color="#F0F0F0" color2="black"/> You can change the hex code for color. #FFFFFF would be white. Save the file and light gray is gone. Thanks you Viann, Andy, and Jon for your help with
understanding this. I used the below option and it worked like a charm.
This will save much time in editing and
toner.

This isn't quite pivot tables but a similar issue..
I have to edit at least dozen survival and hazard charts produced from KM and COX
and the process is excruciating
slow. Every double click to get to one of the properties produces
the dreaded hour glass. Can the
following be changed in the templates
of these
plots:
1) Increase the line thickness to
2.0
2) Eliminate the variable name from the chart legend 3) Change axis "cum survival" to "cumulative" 4) Change the x-axis wording. 5) Eliminate censored cases from the graphs. Or can these graphs created in version 20 be edited in some other program like graphpad? I've never used a graphing program but if I could edit each of these features more expeditiously in another program, it would be worth buying. Thanks all. Carol

Hi Parisec,
try using this syntax to develop custom tables, just format it to suit your survey tab /format zero/ptotal t1 'Total' /mrg set ' ' variable code /table t1+set by t1+variable code(break out) /stat count (set ' ' ) cpct(set(pct3) ' ' :same variable used above as a break out) /title "Which age bracket are you?". |
