new text editor

Maguin, Eugene

I’d like suggestions for text editors. I currently use multi-edit but no support for Unicode is a problem and the company seems to have been in chaos for the past few years, which has meant no updates for a long time.

So: I’d like its replacement to have an equal level of capability. In addition to support for Unicode, the new editor should have column cut/copy/paste (i.e, Ctrl-Shift-F8 in word), file level find/replace (i.e., ability to search a list of files of type ‘xxx’ in a specified directory and find/replace text), and, at least, simple keystroke macro capability (absolutely NOT visual basic!), and support for extremely long line lengths (10K characters). And, I will pay for the program.

Suggestions, please.

Thanks, Gene Maguin

I use Notepad++, and I think it meets all your requirements.  I quite like it, and it's free.

Hi Gene,

I think you want Notepad++, though I'm not sure about its support for extremely long line lengths.

Gene,

Like Jon Peck, I use Notepad++ which has way more features than I use regularly.
I am sort of an "editor junkie" so I also  use and/or own
$ UltraEdit (UE Studio) $
$ EditPad Pro
$ SlickEdit
-- Quined
-- jEdit
-- KEDIT (end of life)
There are others. Over the years, I have also tried others which I have not kept.
The potpourri stems from trying to maintain consistency with clients over several decades.

Given sufficient memory I have loaded 100GB files into Notepad++ (without a whimper).
I have never had it fail to load all of a file, but I was not checking line lengths.
