problem printing syntax files

Cleland, Patricia (EDU)

I need to print a copy of some syntax files, but I’m having a problem.   They only print as portrait on 8½” by 11” paper.  Some lines wrap (badly), others are truncated.  If I could print in landscape orientation, I wouldn’t have a problem but I don’t seem to have any options for orientation and page size when printing syntax.   Am I missing something?

I have the problem in both v17.0.3 and v18.  I don’t remember this as a problem in v15.

I’ve been cutting-and-pasting into Word, but this is clearly a poor second-best to simply printing from within SPSS.

The problem only occurs for syntax files. For output files, I can select orientation and page size from File->Page Setup.

Pat,

If you go directly into your printer settings (i.e. assuming you are using Windows: Printers/Faxes > Double-click on your printer.  I am unsure of what the procedure would be on a Mac) and you should have the option to default ALL print jobs to be printed in landscape - this should solve your problem (just remember to change it back when you are done).  Understandably, this will create another problem, in that you have 3 or 4 extra steps introduced into what should be an easy procedure.  However, if you rarely print abnormally 'wide' syntax files, this "workaround" may be the next best thing to a real solution.  I did some quick poking around and I didn't see any "syntax print" options either via the print menu or SPSS options menu - my guess is that this got lost when they went to the Java platform.

Best of luck,

Open a new Word file (or notepad or wordpad)

Highlight the bits you want from SPSS syntax

ctrl+c to copy

Back to Word

ctrl+v to paste.

Works for me, hope it does for you.

Handy for storing syntax and pasting back into syntax later if necessary.
