Hi,
When I ran an analysis in SPSS 15.0, in the output window I would right click on a result and the option for Results Coach was available. But with SPSS 16.0 this option is no longer available. So with version 16 is the Results Coach component not available? The Results Coach is no longer available. New information has not been added to the Results Coach topics for many years. Similar functionality has been put into Case Studies which is updated with each release.

Hmm. It seems that Case Studies has the same kind of information, but is
not specific to the output in question as Results Coach was. Is that correct? Is there a plan to make Case Studies be specific to the output/syntax (similar to the way the Syntax Help is specific)? The Results Coach was table-specific -- but to a certain extent, it duplicated the information in the term definitions that are still available when you right click on statistical terms in pivot table row or column labels. The Case Studies are procedure-specific, providing detailed, hands-on examples (the sample data files are installed with SPSS) of how to run each statistical procedure and interpret the results.
No new Results Coach topics have been added for new tables or new statistical procedures since SPSS 11, whereas Case Studies are updated for every new release. ________________________________ From: SPSSX(r) Discussion on behalf of Melissa Ives Sent: Thu 2/28/2008 3:55 PM To: [hidden email] Subject: Re: results coach available? Hi Kyle
Thanks for being on the list and contributing SPSS knowledge. Here in Australia, if a developer wants to put up a new building on an existing site, they let the existing building run down and then say the only option is demolish and build the skyscraper they always wanted. It seems to me that SPSS is losing its pedigree of stats for the social sciences by abandoning the coach feature. Most people I know found the coach very useful for their early, uncertain steps in descriptive and inferential stats even if they did not cite it in their research. I'd ask you to reconsider the feature in two ways (1) actively supporting it (2) pending that occurring, including it again with the note that it is for the moment legacy. Gary, SPSS remains committed to the social sciences. We have added many statistics in recent years at the direct request of the social sciences such as generalized linear models, generalized estimating equations, partial least squares regression, etc.
I'm glad that people found this information useful however the Results Coach provided information is an isolated fashion. Similar information is available in the Case Studies, yet it is it done in a larger context of how the procedure is used. We will continue to look for ways to provide useful information. Regards. Kyle -----Original Message----- From: SPSSX(r) Discussion [mailto:[hidden email]] On Behalf Of Gary Oliver Sent: Thursday, February 28, 2008 4:43 PM To: [hidden email] Subject: Re: results coach available? Hi Kyle Thanks for being on the list and contributing SPSS knowledge. Here in Australia, if a developer wants to put up a new building on an existing site, they let the existing building run down and then say the only option is demolish and build the skyscraper they always wanted. It seems to me that SPSS is losing its pedigree of stats for the social sciences by abandoning the coach feature. Hi:
There is another thing I have noticed, the tooltips are no longer available. That is, when a dialog box is up and you right-click on an element, a informational message does not appear any longer. This is unfortunate, students really like this feature along with the Results Coach. The advantage with the Results Coach it was accessible right when the student needed it and there was no searching needing to be done. :( Cheers, Lucia Jason Burke wrote: > >From the menue choose > > Help>Case Studies > > On 2/29/08, Whanger, J. As with the Results Coach, right-mouse help has not been supported in any new procedures/dialogs added for a number of years -- and hopefully there is still no real need to "search" for this information. In most cases, the exact same information is accessible in the help topic accessed by clicking the Help button in the dialog, and one slight advantage to having the information in the help topic is that it's much easier to compare the various statistical options when you can see all the definitions at the same time. For example, here are the definitions for Kendall's tau-b and tau-c that are available when you click the Help button in the Crosstabs Statistics dialog:
Kendall's tau-b. A nonparametric measure of correlation for ordinal or ranked variables that take ties into account. The sign of the coefficient indicates the direction of the relationship, and its absolute value indicates the strength, with larger absolute values indicating stronger relationships. Possible values range from -1 to 1, but a value of -1 or +1 can be obtained only from square tables. Kendall's tau-c. A nonparametric measure of association for ordinal variables that ignores ties. The sign of the coefficient indicates the direction of the relationship, and its absolute value indicates the strength, with larger absolute values indicating stronger relationships. Possible values range from -1 to 1, but a value of -1 or +1 can be obtained only from square tables. (Incidentally, these same definitions are also available by right-clicking the statistic row labels in the pivot table output.) While we were enthusiastic early adopters of right-mouse dialog control level help, very few other applications ever adopted this standard. Consequently, most users were unaware that the feature even existed. -----Original Message----- From: SPSSX(r) Discussion [mailto:[hidden email]] On Behalf Of Lucia Costanzo Sent: Friday, February 29, 2008 4:52 AM To: [hidden email] Subject: Re: results coach available? Hi Kyle,
It was really nice to finally meet you in person at the SPSS Directions Conference in Orlando. I always say in the SPSS Workshops that I conduct here at Cornell that "in SPSS, right-click is your friend" or "in SPSS, help is just a right-click away", but at least two useful features that used to appear when you right-click are now gone in version 16 -- one is the results coach and the other are the tooltips in the dialog boxes (as mentioned by the members of this list). Any chance for these two features to make a comeback? These are really helpful features, and not to mention -- cool!. Florio, it was good meeting you as well.
One of our goals for SPSS 16 was to make the user interface more consistent and predictable. I'm glad that you found the right click help useful, but to be completely accurate when describing recent releases prior to 16, you should have said "Right-click is your friend...except when it isn't" since any procedures and dialogs added in recent years do not support this feature. Why don't the newer procedures support right click help? Because our own usability testing and experience with training classes revealed that most users were completely unaware of this feature unless there happened to be an instructor in the room to point out the feature. Since most users don't have the benefit of an instructor to point out the less obvious features, we decided to move the information to a location where they would be more likely to find it. Why not support both methods? Because it's cost prohibitive to make right-mouse control level help work on literally thousands of controls in hundreds of dialogs. That may be one of the reasons that other applications never adopted this standard. Regards. Hi All,
I've recently been given a data file that contains transactional data, and i was looking for some advice on the best way to analyse the data. The data has a revenue value attached to it and has the individuals last (upto)10 exposures to a set of five products before they bought. Products may be: APPLE =a BANANA =b GRAPES =g ORANGE =o PEAR =p so an individuals stream may well something similar to REVENUE - STREAM 23 - o,a,a,a,p,g,b 45 - o,o,o 24 - b,b,b,g,g,a,o,o,p,p At the minute i've created lots of frequencies and ran an ANOVA on the last exposure before the transaction, but ideally i'd like to look at the stream the individual made, the only way i can see to do this (crude?) is to create a huge set of nested loops (via python for elegance and ease) and run a count on those Vs revenue to find the mean for each path. At some later stage i might get the stream of those who don't make a transaction, at which point i intent to build a Bayesian network, but until that point does anyone have any suggestions on other types of analysis i could do specifically towards the path? ====================To manage your subscription to SPSSX-L, send a message to [hidden email] (not to SPSSX-L), with no body text except the command.
