Dear listers,
I'd like to find a syntax/procedure for sampling from 2 vars, 2 samples with the same means. Do you have some suggestions, please? Cristiano,
If you haven't received a useful reply from somebody, could you give more information on your problem. I can't quite visualize what you want to do. Listers,
There are FOUR cells that I have tried to copy and paste from SPSS. Just four little cells. Every time I try - SPSS crashes! Of course I can just copy down the content of these cells and then enter them manually. But the principle of the thing! It's just FOUR little cells. Wh should this make SPSS crash? I should state that the file is about 1.5 GB. There is no indication that the processor is busy before I try this. I select, hit copy, and then the little hour glass appears and spss freezes. I shall look to see if there's a patch I'm missing. Hi George,
Thank you for the tip. I tried doing the "cache data now" but SPSS ver. 17.0 still freezes up. I did notice that with smaller file sizes, (<14 mill. Cases (500mb), and without caching the data), I do not have this problem, but with a file of 35 million cases (2gb), the problem occurs. The entire system also begins to get very sluggish, even after I shut down SPSS, almost as if resources are still being used for SPSS(?) I did notice that if I scroll to the bottom of the file and wait for the cells to populate (don't see the "?") any more, but the actual data are displayed, I can copy and paste, so I think it may be memory related, although I do have 2gb RAM. None of these issues occur with version 14. My system is an XP (SP3) box with a 3.4ghz processor, 2gb RAM, 160+SATA hdd, running Outlook concurrently. Do you have any idea of how I may "flush" the system memory so once I shut down SPSS, my system does not remain sluggish? For flushing I've had good luck with going to my temp and spsstemp

Hello Matthew and Mike,
I have not been able to replicate the problem. I can copy and paste 6 cells within the data editor for a 2.2 gb file (40m cases and 50 variables), running SPSS 17.0.1 in XP (SP 2) with 3.5 gb RAM. (I've only tried 6 cells so far.) I have asked some colleagues on the environmental side of technical support to look further into the problem and will post their response. Are you talking about drawing samples from a pop with the same pop means?
open a new instance of SPSS. Copy the syntax below. Paste it into a syntax window and run it. Is this what you mean? new file. set seed = 20090116. *generate 2 random integers with same pop mean. *sample means will be indistinguishable unless you go to a lot of decimal places. INPUT PROGRAM. LOOP id=1 TO 3000. COMPUTE x = rv.normal(0,1). COMPUTE IX = rnd(x). COMPUTE y = rv.normal(0,2). COMPUTE Iy = rnd(y). END CASE. END LOOP. END FILE. END INPUT PROGRAM. FORMATS id (F3.0) ix iy (f1). compute constant=1. AGGREGATE outfile=* /break = constant /meanx = mean(x) /meany = mean(y). formats meanx, meany (f5). LIST . formats meanx, meany (f5.1). LIST . formats meanx, meany (f5.2). LIST . formats meanx, meany (f5.3). LIST . formats meanx, meany (f10.8). LIST . Please explain in more detail what you are trying to do. What is the
context in which you are trying to do it? What constitutes a cases in the population you are interested in? What is the nature of the variables? Do you have a population list from which you want to draw the samples?
