upgrade to version 20 from version 15

Tanya Dockendorf-2

We are currently using SPSS v15 and are considering upgrading to v20. I looked at the release notes and have an idea of additional features, but I am wondering if a few people would be able to share some feedback about things like performance speed, bugs, annoyances that might have been introduced in later versions that you think we should consider. Also, if there are any particular features that you like or don’t like, that information would be great too, anything that stands out for you in the last few versions – good or bad. We all use spss for different types of analysis and what is essential to you may not be useful to me and vice versa, but that’s ok. Please don’t feel like you have to go into a lot of detail, as I know we are all busy.

Thanks in advance!

I can’t answer your question,

HOWEVER, I just got pricing to upgrade to V 20, and it’s 2.5x the cost of the v18 to v19 upgrade.

What is going on?

I have just started using v19, so cannot comment on v20 specifically.  Does v15 do everything (or most of) what you need?  If not, which newer features of v20 are enticing you?  Depending on what they are, there may be other ways to get the job done.  David M is plodding along quite nicely with v 11.5, after all.  ;-)

I think the answer to your question is… IBM. We were shocked when we found out the pricing too.

Even though there are some additional features in the later versions that would be nice to have (like PLS), you are right that there are either other cheaper ways to get the job done or it's cosmetic things that I can live without. The problem is that we need an extra license of SPSS because the department has grown. Buying a stand alone version would actually be even MORE expensive than to upgrade existing licenses to v20 and add one more concurrent user license. IBM will not allow us to add another concurrent user to the existing v15, if they did, we would have taken that route :(

You need to purchase SPSS Inflation Package to see why SPSS prices is going up so much.

If it's any interest I've knocked up and uploaded a file with some examples
of screenshots for 15 18 and 19.  18 uses colour-coded syntax (except for
abbreviations): 19 is prettier (and probably uses less blue ink when
printing).  I only use basic stuff in entry level tutorials for capturing,
managing and analysing data from questionnaire surveys.

http://surveyresearch.weebly.com/uploads/2/9/9/8/2998485/spss_15_-_pasw_18_-
_spss_19_differences.pdf

I can't do much in the way of analysis comparisons as I can't get a licence
code for 15.  I have 18 on my other (very slow) computer, but now use 19
exclusively on my new one.  Most of the examples on my site are from 15 and
18, but from now on they'll all be in 19 (some already are).  Fingers
crossed they leave 19 running until I've completed the first editions of the
remaining tutorials.
