v24 output setup problem

Maguin, Eugene

Monday,a MS 10 service pack, 17.02 or 17.03, I think, was installed and it seems that I have lost some spss 24 functionality. Specifically, in the file dropdown, the page setup no longer works, meaning that I no longer have margin control and no longer have paper orientation (portrait/landscape) control. In fact, clicking on page setup does nothing. The other page related controls (attributes, preview, and print) continue to work. I’ll add that page setup button in print preview no longer functions either.

These controls absolutely worked previously.

I’m interested to  hear about solutions/workarounds.

Thanks, Gene Maguin

Re: v24 output setup problem

File > Page Setup provides lose options, but IIRC, it is related to printer drivers, so a driver update might have messed this up.  But note also that this menu item only appears in the Viewer window, so make sure that that is where you are when you look for it.

The good news, though, is that as of V24 (maybe 23), you can set orientation and margins via Edit > Options > Viewer, so you would rarely if ever need the Page Setup dialog.

Re: v24 output setup problem

Maguin, Eugene

Thanks Jon. I wouldn’t have thought of that as Edit->Options is mainly something I do when I get a new version. I’ll ask our IT people about the printer driver for the printer I was using. The key ‘nice thing’ about File->Page Setup is page control at print-time to optimize page space against output wrapping.

I’ve never heard the phrase ‘lose options’ what does it mean?

Sorry, that was supposed to be

lost
options.

If you can't get the Page Setup option to work, there is an extension command (naturally), that provides both dialog box and syntax control for setting these.  The command is STATS OUTPUT ATTRS.  It allows you to set header and footer text, page orientation, page margins, starting page number, and inter-item spacing.

Re: v24 output setup problem

Timothy Hennigar-2

I wish they would not decide to ‘lose’ options as it were – maybe I am a dinosaur – but having used this program since the pc+ days I am accustomed to things like Page Setup

and I want it to work – Fortunately – I have had no such issues with my V24 lately and things seem ok .. I hate it when they arbitrarily decide to change things like LOOKS (in V25) and

do NOT make it backward compatible or scripting likewise – I have huge amounts of little programs snippets that I pull out now and then and I do not have the time (or the interest)

to re-invent wheels that rolled perfectly.

Re: v24 output setup problem

Jon Peck
It's a one time change to set the tablelooks back to the old version via Edit > Options > Pivot Tables if you don't like the new ones (which IMO are a great improvement).

There certainly wasn't anything done to remove the Page Setup dialog - mine works fine, and it was apparently a Windows update that introduced this problem for Gene, not a change to Statistics.

As for scripting, with a few minor exceptions, there haven't been any incompatible changes that I know of since the upheaval of V16, when the whole Viewer architecture was replaced.

Re: v24 output setup problem

Maguin, Eugene
In reply to this post by Timothy Hennigar-2

As the original poster of that set off this thread, the source of the problem was the installation of the MS 17-09 patch to 10. I checked the problem here yesterday with somebody who does not have the patch installed and Page Setup functioned. And, for what it’s worth Word was unable to connect to that printer as well. This whole deal has nothing to do with 24.

Been watching this thread with interest and just compared V24 v V25, running Win 10 1709, and the print options are working in both versions as expected so check for an MS update
