what does this error information mean?

Wang Xu-4
Dear SPSS Listers,
Today I ran a recoding session to recode all the missing values in the survey data into a default number 9. However, when spss was processing the data, the error information as followed pops up, what does this mean? I have one more question about it, I tried to run 'recode' to recode some variables' missing value number to 9, but another way of reocoding the missing value is to set in the variable window under each variable. What are the differences of two ways of setting missing values? Thanks a lot!

To answer the nonexistent variable problem: You have a typo between A15B and A15D. Instead of A15C, you have A1.

A15B A1
     A15D

Also, there is bound to be a much tidier way to do this that does not require you to list each variable individually.  E.g., if the variables are contiguous, you could use the TO keyword.

RECODE A1A TO A34D (SYSMIS=9).
exe.

If there are groups of variables that are contiguous, but with some other variables stuck in between the groups, you can use multiple TO's.  E.g.,

RECODE
 A1A TO A9H
 A10A TO A34D (SYSMIS=9).
exe.

And if these variables represent ALL of the variables in the file, you can shorten it even more:

RECODE ALL (SYSMIS=9).
exe.

Re: what does this error information mean?

Wang Xu-4
Thanks a lot, Heidi Green for your prompt reply and hlep! I am very grateful of your help on this. I sort of iorn out the problem. But first,   I am a green hand at handling data with spss. Instead of typing and running syntax with spss, I chose Transform-----Recode into the same variables then choose the variables and missing values and new values (999).It seems that spss has difficulty understanding variable names, since I name it something like A15 C. So I ran the command by inputting only ten variables each time instead of squeezing them all into the recode window. Then every problem is gone. Every missing value is recoded into 999.

在2010-06-17 09:13:13,"Heidi Green" <[hidden email]> 写道:

The mistake is in the recode syntax that you are running, not in your data file. Did you paste the syntax from the windows drop down? If so, perhaps it pasted wrong. There are a few other variables that look like they might have typos too. I would check each variable in the list you pasted below against what is in your data file. Or, as another responder mentioned, use the “TO” command. I may have time to help more tomorrow if you need it…

To perform computing task -  summation of variables var 1a + var1b to var 10a + var 10b followed by dividing the result with 4.
The follwing code was used and not worked.

COMPUTE  consumptionfood = ((HE1C+HE1D) TO (HE10C+HE10D))*4.
VARIABLE LABELS consumptionfood 'Monthly Consumption Expenditure for Food'.
COMPUTE consumptionnf =( (HE11B+HE11C) TO (HE15B +HE15C)) + ( ( ( HE16B+HE16C) TO (HE21B + HE21C) ) / 12).
VARIABLE LABELS consumptionnf 'Monthly Consumption Expenditure for Non Food'.
COMPUTE consumptiontotal= consumptionfood + consumptionnf.
VARIABLE LABELS consumptiontotal ' Monthly Consumption Expenditure'.
EXECUTE .

The error mesage says TO key word is not appropriate other than SUM and MEAN.What should be used instead? or where am I wrong? Please advise.
Thanks,
Khaing Soe

Re: what does this error information mean?

Ruben Geert van den Berg
Dear Khaing,

If I understand you correctly, you want to add up

1) var1a
2) var1b to var 10a/*-> var1b, var10a and all variables that are located between them
3) var10b

and divide this by 4.

Please try

COMPUTE  consumptionfood = (sum(HE1C,HE1D TO HE10C,HE10D))/*4.
execute.
