Re: SPSS now called PASW

Mark A Davenport MADAVENP

Some time ago, SPSS created a 'Consumer Relations Board' made up of some more-or-less vocal long-time users.  I am/was a member of that board.  I assume I still am, if it still exists.  I never heard ANYTHING about this change in branding before today.  I do recall past webinars in which Kyle Weeks used the term 'predictive analytics', but I do not recall any mention of a global name change.  Nor do I recall this issue being brought up during v17 beta testing.  Considering the surprise evident on the list, I would say that this was a very quick, very quiet decision made with little if any customer input.

Strange...

True, it loses a lot of history, but they abandoned the originial meaning years ago when they declared on their web site, something to the effect that "SPSS does not stand for anything" and discarded the history of being the "Statistical Package for the Social Sciences." In effect they were saying: "Hey, we value money (business) more than science."

So be it...

I wish they change to a name that make sense and easy pronounce if they believe that will make any positive impact.

We will always refer this software as SPSS unless we receive official complains J.  It’s  too much troubles to change the name from our support web site about this software when not much know what’s PASW but SPSS.  We will see…

In additional, don’t know if this is the trend of “change” that everything has to be changed!!!???  It’s a really bad move!  it’s not about name but all about the software itself.  Anyway, it’s time to move to other software that they will stick with their name if PASW is not any better.   SAS is a powerful analytical software, I am glad they didn’t change name but have new designed SAS logo few years back.   Ling

Weird.  I'm curious what the product strategy is that leads to the name change.  There must be a huge segment of the user base out there for whom the term "predictive analytics" has particular significance.  From my perspective, predictive analytics is a something you do with SPSS using statistical methods, not the product itself.

Well, this is one user who will never use the term PASW.  Bleh.

It just seems odd that they would change the name to something that isn't much more meaningful or attractive than SPSS. PASW doesn't exactly roll off the tongue. Predictive Analytics Software (what does the W stand for?).

No matter, so long as it still works.

I might have some issues when I go to get budget approval for an upgrade to PASW and have to explain what it is.

I started out with DOS using SPSS/PC as a sociology undergraduate student. One of the few "code freaks" interested in programming. I understand that SPSS is not the “Statistical Package for the Social Sciences” as it was in the beginning, particularly after the boom of Business Intelligence and Data Mining. I’ve also moved on professionally from the social sciences to Data Mining in the telecom area. Change is obviously needed in a dynamic environment, but they could have been much more creative!!! I agree that it’s a bit embarrassing to say I work for example with PAWS Statistics or Modeler instead of SPSS or Clementine. The name is simply freaky. How are you supposed to pronounce it? SAS definitely sounds much cooler. I hope there’s willingness on SPSS’s behalf to recognize the marketing error and change the names to something more attractive.

I agree, this might be the time to switch to R. It is made by researchers/statisticians for researchers and statisticians. Yeah, it is not easy to learn, but the power you gain form learning to program in R is worth the effort. It is free and you know it isn't going to change it's name to something like "Hot New Business Jargon."

Analytics is the process of changing a verb to a noun so you can sell it.

Is this a late April Fool's joke?

From the Desk of Jason Verlen
Vice President & Chief Product Strategist of SPSS Inc.

It's an exciting time at SPSS Inc. We're working diligently in 2009 to make SPSS Inc. an even more valued partner for you and your organization.

We're proud that our products ensure you meet your research and business goals by driving the widespread use of data in decision making. We group our products in four "families" and they are designed to work together as part of one comprehensive analytics platform. To better reflect this unity, our products will be renamed under the Predictive Analytics Software (PASW(r)) portfolio umbrella.

Over the next year, you will see new naming introduced with each release of our software products.

Products in our Statistics family, like PASW Statistics (formerly SPSS Statistics), comprise the most widely used suite of statistical software in the world.
Our Modeling family, including our leading data-mining workbench PASW Modeler (formerly Clementine) is consistently positioned as the leader in the analytics space.
Our Data Collection family (formerly Dimensions), including PASW Data Collection Author and PASW Reports for Surveys, helps you obtain an accurate view of customer attitudes and opinions.
The Deployment family bridges the gap between analysis and action and includes products like PASW Collaboration and Deployment Services (formerly Predictive Enterprise Services).

Rest assured that these name changes don't change the foundational technology on which you've come to count. We're continuing to build on our 40 year legacy with new products, enhanced performance, and robust deployment capabilities.

SPSS Inc. will be doing its part to help you make predictive analytics a vital part of your business operations.

Best regards,

Jason Verlen

Craig,

I bet they are serious. They just can't leave well enough alone and
there is a lot more money to be made catering to the business community
rather than academics.
Maybe it is time to switch to SAS.....

Why is it that I can not find what the "W" stands for on the website?

Predictive Analytics Software...Whatever.

What's in a name.  Marketing strategy and re-branding aside, as long as the engine is the same, we'll continue to use it...

Re: SPSS now called PASW

John Fiedler
In reply to this post by Heidi Green
I am not sure that PASW will work.

It might be confused with PASW Inc (formerly Pacific Software)
http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0EIN/is_2007_July_6/ai_n19345322/

Or maybe with the Performing Arts Studio West
http://acronyms.thefreedictionary.com/PASW

Or perhaps with an Alaska airport at Skwentna
http://www.airnav.com/airport/PASW

I'll not likely confuse it with SPSS!
