SPSS now called PASW

Craig Wood
Is this a late April Fool's joke?

From the Desk of Jason Verlen
Vice President & Chief Product Strategist of SPSS Inc.

It's an exciting time at SPSS Inc. We're working diligently in 2009 to make SPSS Inc. an even more valued partner for you and your organization.

We're proud that our products ensure you meet your research and business goals by driving the widespread use of data in decision making. We group our products in four "families" and they are designed to work together as part of one comprehensive analytics platform. To better reflect this unity, our products will be renamed under the Predictive Analytics Software (PASW(r)) portfolio umbrella.

Over the next year, you will see new naming introduced with each release of our software products.

Products in our Statistics family, like PASW Statistics (formerly SPSS Statistics), comprise the most widely used suite of statistical software in the world.
Our Modeling family, including our leading data-mining workbench PASW Modeler (formerly Clementine) is consistently positioned as the leader in the analytics space.
Our Data Collection family (formerly Dimensions), including PASW Data Collection Author and PASW Reports for Surveys, helps you obtain an accurate view of customer attitudes and opinions.
The Deployment family bridges the gap between analysis and action and includes products like PASW Collaboration and Deployment Services (formerly Predictive Enterprise Services).

Rest assured that these name changes don't change the foundational technology on which you've come to count. We're continuing to build on our 40 year legacy with new products, enhanced performance, and robust deployment capabilities.

SPSS Inc. will be doing its part to help you make predictive analytics a vital part of your business operations.

Best regards,

Jason Verlen

Yup! Once you apply V17.0.2 it is now called PASW Statistics 17.0

Nothing like changing the brand name

Craig,

I bet they are serious. They just can't leave well enough alone and
there is a lot more money to be made catering to the business community
rather than academics.
Maybe it is time to switch to SAS.....

yup, seems real enough - googling PASW and SPSS shows they rebranded their products - wow - one of the most recognizable brand and company names in the world

somehow PASW does not roll off the tongue like SPSS.

let's take a vote (unscientific of course, but skewed towards heavy users, which might be a good thing).

Ornelas, Fermin-2
Unrelated to this topic, but the timing could not come at a worse time when the financial sector is under public fire for their use of financial derivatives which from what I have read has its underpinnings from heavy mathematics and statistical (financial) modeling. The naming convention is intended to make it more appealing to that audience.

Well, we can always refer to it as "The Program Formerly Known as SPSS"

(quoting "The Artist Formerly Known as Prince")

Should this list be renamed PASW-L? (just kidding, I'm in a sort of
funny before-holidays mood...)

Dr Baker is right. Shakespeare was wrong. Love thy nostalgic name
which stood as a brand identity trap- mention SPSS and people in
business world went ah! nice nice . I studied that in college for
surveys!!!

While  other (cough) softwares raked in eh money for basically
creating bad models ---  can there be  a class action lawsuits against
the softwares which was supposed to make the default mortgage models.
I dont think SPSS was applied in Bank Mortgage forecasting but (cough)
several others were.

Besides I like the new features -maybe I am too young for (cough) classic Coke.

Ajay

Re: SPSS now called PASW

Victor Kogler
In reply to this post by Craig Wood

Weird.  I'm curious what the product strategy is that leads to the name change.  There must be a huge segment of the user base out there for whom the term "predictive analytics" has particular significance.  From my perspective, predictive analytics is a something you do with SPSS using statistical methods, not the product itself.

Well, this is one user who will never use the term PASW.  Bleh.

Jason Verlen

somehow PASW does not roll off the tongue like SPSS.

let's take a vote (unscientific of course, but skewed towards heavy users, which might be a good thing).

It is usually is done to make a new brand association as per classical
Brand Theory bu Aaker.

The existing base cares more for practical and technical usefulness
than name, but potential customer base could be the new target, so as
to get more resources to roll it faster.

I covered the screenshots and new features on www.decisionstats.com

My personal opinion SPSS was a great software with the best GUI but
never an aggressive brand for marketing. While more aggresive brands
with worse user interface raked in money.

I did a detailed google search for the acronym and I was right on this
count- PASW was a weapon system that is used for thermal imaging.

At the end of April, I believe that people would come around to this-

SPSS is still the same  company PASW is a new  brand and you still
have to clean dirty data and design the input data sources properly.

Regards,

Ajay

Re: SPSS now called PASW

Baker, Harley
In reply to this post by Victor Kogler
Re: SPSS now called PASW I am with you. I started using SPSS before the burgundy manual even existed (pre version 6 on an ancient CDC/CYBER). It has always been good that academic researchers and institutional researchers had a stellar brand that honored who we are and what we do. It seems we no longer have a line of products that acknowledge our presence as customers. This is dismaying because we have been staunchly loyal customers at that. Verlen’s letter says it all: “research and business goals by driving the widespread use of data in decision making” as if the only research in which they are interested is the business kind. I’m dusting off my SAS manuals . . .  At least they probably won’t change their name in ways that cause long-term users – and members of their Customer Advisory Board - to feel disenfranchised.

Re: SPSS now called PASW

In reply to this post by Marta Garcia-Granero
Sigh.

I've been with SPSS since grad school and we were using punch cards and
17.5 x 11 coding sheets.  Remember the big blue reference books?  We sure
thought we were hot stuff walking around campus with those.  Remember having
to turn the card deck in at the computer center and waiting three or four
hours for the priests of the mainframe to run your job?  And we thought we
were really clever when we used NCC1701 (the registration number for the
starship Enterprise) for our job numbers.

Remember the first "interactive" version?  We sat at a dumb terminal and
typed in the commands ("just remember, each line on the screen is the same
as one punch card")...then went over to the computer center and picked up
the output.

And I still put the slash at the end of the previous line, rather than at
the beginning of the current line, like my quirky stats instructor told us
to "because it is more elegant."

Somehow a world without SPSS won't be the same.  I may have to switch to SAS
just to use a program that has a cool name.

Well, we can always refer to it as "The Program Formerly Known as SPSS"

(quoting "The Artist Formerly Known as Prince")

Should this list be renamed PASW-L? (just kidding, I'm in a sort of
funny before-holidays mood...)

The name change to PASW is a very bad move. I hope they reverse it soon.

Whenever someone asked me what tools I use, and I say SPSS...atleast some of them would ask if that's something new. Now with PASW which sounds like some political party name, I am sure people will think I am crazy to use an unknown software. Anyways I am slowly migrating to SAS.

Re: SPSS now called PASW

Let me throw in another opinion...

I can't remember what user-unfriendly program I used for econometrics in Grad School (UC Davis Ag Econ circa 1994/1995); but it was clunky and slow!

I started using SPSS around version 6 at my first job as a Quantitative Business Analyst. I have been using it ever since and except for a few rough releases that I didn't use due to too many bugs/errors, I have been mostly pleased with the improvements and they have continued to make my data analysis and research work easier and easier.

So, I say, who cares about the name? If it works I will use it. Go ahead, curse me as a business user!

Please note that my comments are made in the spirit of good fun and typed with a smile on my face.
